A used machinery place would be your best bet. I picked up a mid 50s Rockwell from a place in Provedence RI (http://www.goldmachinery.com/)for $100 last year. I figured that if I was gonna spend $2-300, I'd rather have an old commercial unit rather than a new chicom POS.

All it cost me was $30-40 in gas for the ride up and back. I originally was going to get a benchtop South Bend from them, but couldn't find ANYONE that had parts or info on non Ibarmia SB drill presses. I took the ride up anyway and asked the guy if he had any Rockwell or Buffalo floor models. He points to a really grimy Rockwell in the back corner and says it's three phase, and doesn't work. OK, how much do you want for it...How 'bout a hundred? Sold. Got it home, cleaned off the motor plate, and it said single phase. Looked at the plug and it's a standard 3 prong 110v. Plug it in, turn it on and it spun like a top.

ebay. lots of em. i did a search here for drill presses and was pretty set on getting an old model. found a few great deals here, but didn't have the cash...ended up with a sears card and the $320 Craftsman drill press with the laser sight. would like an old one for the durability, but this has a warranty, seems to run ok, has a nice chuck, and the laser sight is actually pretty handy. same basic design as the harbor freight, ridgid, and jet drill press...just different motor and slightly different casing. it's pretty solid though. 250 rpm's...
but yeah, EBAY |
