Best HVLP gun for the money?
Is it worthwhile to spend the money on a good gun, like a Sata, or will a cheapie work good enough?

I use to use cheaper guns (couldn't afford the really good) and felt I got just as good of performance. I did find some parts would wear quicker on my guns compared to what some other guys were using but parts are cheap and easy to replace. The most important thing for any paint gun is cleaning and maintanence.

Obviously, the better you can paint the more you notice fine differences in guns. Longevity and availability of replacement parts is what a lot of the high end guns offer. I was looking at getting a new gun, so I went down to one the biggest paint supply stores in the Phoenix area and shot the shit with one of the more senior painters there. We talked about the quality of some of the lower end guns and he stated that one of the best HVLP gun he's used under $150 is the Purple anodized unit that Harbor Freight sells for $65 and puts on sale for $50. But if you don't keep it clean, replacement parts are non-existant. Sata's are nice, but if you're a beginner you'll never notice what you paid for. Just shoot base/clear sand out anything you don't like... That's what I do

Astro Pneumatics HVLP gun
a friend of mine bought one to shoot primer and liked it so much he got another for doing basic paint work (not cars). so, i picked one up and really like it. i then told another friend and he got one to paint his motorcycle. he sprayed primer, base coat, and clear coat all out of the gun with very good results (most of his problems were due to 0 experience painting stuff). i got the 1.9 orifice for spraying heavier paints, mainly Eastwood Chassis Black and Rust Encapsulator. i think my friend who did the motorcyle got a 1.5 orifice. they usually run $80-90 and you can find them on sale if you look. http://www.thetoolwarehouse.net/shop/AP-HVLPDX9.html
