Best Plasma Cutter in $1000 range?

Here's the machines I've found in this price range. Which machine would you recommend? Any personal experience with any of these? Any others you would recommend? The machine will be used to drag cut 1/8th to 3/16" with occasional severing of 3/8's to 1/2". Mostly for fabbing link mounts, gussets and cleaning axle housings. These are all cyberweld.com prices.

In the cutting specs they all say stand off quality cut. What is that?

The ESAB unit is out of my price rang e at $1300.

Thermal Dynamics Cutmaster 38 Plasma Cutter $1,070.00

Cut Capacity: 3⁄8 (10mm) Genuine 1⁄2 (13mm) Maximum 5⁄8 (16mm) Severance 1⁄4 (6mm) Pierce
Duty Cycle: 35% @ 30A

HOBART AIRFORCE 400 PLASMA CUTTER $1,166.00

Capable of Drag Cutting quality cut (approx. 7 IPM) at 3/8" mild steel. Stand Off quality cut (approx. 7 IPM) at 1/2" mild steel.

MILLER SPECTRUM 375 PLASMA CUTTER $1,166.00

Rated Cutting Capacity 1/16 in Stand off Cutting
Drag Cut Rated: 3/8 in...w/Standoff Rated: 5/16 in
Drag Cut Quality: 1/2 in...w/Standoff Quality: 3/8 in
Drag Cut Sever: 5/8 in...w/Standoff Sever: 1/2 in
35% Duty Cycle

I think its over kill to get a machine that can cut over 3/4 material almost all the stuff we do is 1/4 or less. They are all decent machines though

None of those can cut 3/4"

If they're all good then the TD unit is looking the best witht he lowest price of the three. I can't wait to get this cutter, after using sawzalls and cut off wheels, this thing is going to be sweet

Have you looked at the Hypertherm 380? I love mine, and paid a little less then $1000 for it on sale.

If you search around there are some used ones that go pretty cheap. I got my ESAB for $875 and it will sever 1.25". It was used, the guy said it was a "demo". I couldn't tell it had been used, he also threw in a new torch and about $200 in consumables. Patience pays sometimes.

Is there a difference in the price of the consumables? That may influence your decision. I was able to get a ESAB Handy550 factory refurbished for $1100 delivered to the door. Couldn't tell it was a refurb. It was dropshipped straight from ESAB. Not everyone carrys the consumables though. I have to order them ahead of time and keep the spares on hand.

Was looking in that range too, The Hypertherm or Thermal Dynamics are the two I was looking at. Never checked consumables for each, Both only make plasmas so both are good. Take your pick.

I paid only 1100$ for a Miller 2050, last year. Used, mind you. So keep your eyes peeled in the trader!

7/8" rated capacity, 1" Quality, and 1 1/4" Sever.

The 2050 kicks ass!!

Hypertherm Powermax 380...... !!!!!!!

A local shop told me it was the best, had the lowest defect rate etc.. over the Miller, EASB etc... I did the research and came to the same conclusion...

I bought mine and use it ALL the time.... Cuts 3/8" without breaking a sweat. Cuts 1/2" just slower....

No regrets what-so-ever!!

I have the Hypertherm 380 and love it. Great size, cuts 3/8" clean with new consumables, and has not given me a problem. When I bought it I had a tech at Hypertherm and Miller both confirm that they are the exact same machine as the Miller 375. I bought mine from a great eBayer named Harris Welding out of Ohio.

3 sets? Holy cr@p! You just made up my mind.
5 sets for my old Hobart were $100+ and that machine was too small for me.

Picked up my ESAB 550 for $325.00 last year. It was used and I had to spend another $300.00 for repairs but well worth it. Look around they do come up for sale used.

I picked up a 55amp snap on plasma cutter, (built by lincoln I believe) from a punk on the PBB that said it worked fine for 500.00. After 375.00 in repairs, it finally works. It'll cut up to 1/2" at about 10" per minute, but rips through 1/4" as fast as you can drag the stinger.

I own a Miller Spectrem and love it. Just remember you can go into almost any welding shop and find Miller and Lincoln. All the little guys you might have some trouble finding parts for.
