well i just bought a craftsman ball bearing top and bottom chest from sears last night.
it was a 1200 dollar combo (give or take).
i removed a track with no problem, once installing the drawer the track bound up and knocked 4 of the ball bearings out. this happened 2 times on 2 different tracks. the display chest at the store was locking up in close to the same way im sure it has the same problem, the floor guy assured me it was nothing.
so now i cant close the drawer and im cross between getting a non ball bearing friction style, since i am very happy in the size and drawer count.
has anyone else had similar problems with this chest, and are the craftsman friction ones today, the same as the years past.
Also post how your tool chest is holding up and how long you have had it.
Maybe try a bit of lube on those tracks to get the balls moving freely. Otherwise, Id say exhange it if that doesnt work. As for frictions, I havent bought a tool box in a while. Im thinkin about gettin another and it will probably be a BB, but the ones without the griplatch that are catalog/online only, as the griplatch is kinda annoying.
yes it is its something you CAN get used to but dont WANT to.
the box that i have right now is 59168, and 59169. i want the friction version.
i think they changed the tracks because i hear good things about the old ones and no problems at all. i seem to be the only one with problems with the new ones, and yes i am picky but i dont think i am being "picky" about this.
next time your at your local sears check out what im talking about, pull a drawer out of a BB floor model and look at what im talking about. its a stamped out peice of sheet metal with some balls in it, thats what i have a problem with. the main part of the track is ok but this stamped peice isnt cutting it.
Take the POS back if you aren't happy with it. Sears can suck a fat one in my book, unless absolutely necessary I'll never purchase anything from them again after my HDTV/credit card problems. I can't count the times I've busted my knuckles with one of their crap ratchets.
I have one of the BB ones with the grip latch and the latch sucks but the toolbox works great. For the price difference between it and others, I'll deal with the problems I have and if needed bring it back.
Hint if you want to see if you can save a few bucks like I did...
Look online for sales at sears.com they are not the same as the store ones. If you find one you like, print it out and bring it in. When the sales guy fixes the price, price match policy, you get sale plus an extra 10 percent. Saved me a few bucks
For the price you pay for these things you should'n have to live with it. I had the same thing happen when I got mine. I'm not sure what causes it, but I took it back and had them reorder me another set. The second set was fine. I'm pretty mechanically inclined, and I could NOT figure out what was causing this to happen. On another drawer, they are adjustments to rearrange the drawers (i.e. bigger drawers at top instead of bottom). As I tried to make this adjustment I could never get the slides back on. I love the boxes, but its weird some of the problems they have. Stuart
its from us pushing the drawer into the smaller track, then pushing it over the small stop and bending the track a little. you just need to be really carefull when you swap the drawers around not to do this.
im going to call and order a few free tracks becasuse ill have them in the middle of the day if it desides to blow up on me.
im keeping it because there isnt anything else to make me happy for that money. unless the snap on guy comes in with a huge deal and im still in my 90 days.
For $1200 I want to me friggin' happy with my purchase... That's a lot of money. Take it back. I've had problems over the last couple of years with boxes from Sears. But my 10 year old snap on is still spectacular....
I've never had a problem with mine but my bottom box has cracks in the upper corners and most all of the welds on the draws have broken.
