I am building a new shop and I just had the bright idea of putting a overhead hoist in it. The shop will be 100x60 steel building and the main work area will be about 50x60. My idea was to make a dual axis trolley system so that I can move objects any where in the workspace. I have found the trolleys that you can connect a chainfall to that run on an I-Beam but I am looking for a set of trolleys that can run off the I beams and support another I Beam. The span will be about 55 feet.
What you are talking about is called a "bridge crane & hoist." The bridge being the traveling beam. The bridge itself is not too expensive but the runway beams and the additional structural supports they will need could significantly affect the cost of your structure. A bridge crane will typically come assembled from the supplier as the traveling beam, trolleys on each end, and hoist. They can be electric or manually operated. I think I've seen manual ones up to 2.5 ton.
Hay man where you been? Yes these guys are corect that is a bridge crane you speak of If you need some help with it let me know i have several here to take pics of. We just got done building a small one, in one of the outbuildings here at work for the new fab shop.
Where are these elusive companies?
I want to build a freestanding crane in front of by garage with a top mounted bridge. Height 12', span 30', bridge 20', load 6000 lbs. What size beams and posts will it take to do this?
