How are you folks dealing with low garage doors?

Obviously, my build will have some bugs to sort out. But getting it in and out of my typical garage door with the build complete is going to be a problem.

I know some have commercial doors on your shops, but others have to be in a regular garage. Are you guys putting on old rims with no tires on every time you bring the truck in?

Thanks

Roy

I will be there someday when my rig actually leaves the garage. I plan on using my winch to suck the front end down, then ratchet strap the rear down until it fits under the door.

I have a 10 foot garage with a typical 6.5' door. I removed the top off my Bronco to fit the back end in and use my two 29" spares in front to slip under the door. I just completed my solid axle swap today and it worked for me. When I get bigger tires it might not work anymore.

Deflate to 2-3 PSI... ratchet strap the springs down, or use the front winch to bring down the front, etc.

Thanks for the replies. I never thought of the ratchet-strap idea.

I am getting my garage door re-hung later this summer.

It was installed with what is called "low profile" tracks. These tracks make the garage door hang below the opening. I have the space above the door in the roof, so I'm having it re-hung and rebuilt to be above the opening.

Of course, I'll have garage door opener problems; I have a cross beam that sits down and blocks where a normal garage door opener is placed. My solution is the opener goes above the beam; I've got a neighbor who did this.

The worst case I've seen was a friend's Willy's pickup on 1 tons. We had to roll it out on floor jacks with the rotors about an inch from the floor.

If it doesnt fit in the garage and its not a fullsize vehicle its too tall. Lower it 2" and enjoy the benefits of lower center of gravity.

The truck has no lift and 31's, but I'm building a custom body that is quite a bit taller than stock, and it has a roof rack.

we put 8' doors in my house when we first bought it. it was a full gut job. pier and beam, only original to the home now is the exterior brick. now i have a 2400 square foot shop in the back with 1500 square foot of office space above. the 8' doors made it so easy on the house i decided to use 8' on the shop with a high clearance door. works great for jeeps ad trucks cause i have a full 8' the money i saved from the doors (4- 16ft doors so i saved about 1200 bucks) topped off my equipment fund. basicaly see about getting the high clearance tracks and you will prolly be just fine. they will give you around another 5 or 6 inches overall.

or just put some bare rims on it....

But seriously - its too tall if it doesn't fit into a standard garage door. heck my new rig (toyota on 36" has 4-6" of clearance with 25 psi in the tires)

Had to do the bare rim thing at my old house. Works great until a friend gets in it and does burnouts in the driveway. Does quite a number to the concrete.

I had dealt with a 6' 6" door for over 4 years - finally, couldn't handle it any longer and raised the door to 8'. The garage is under the bedrooms - had to build a temporary wall about 4' inside the garage to hold up the house above then demolished everything outwards, dropped in a 20' I-beam (400 lbs) into place, rebuilt the garage frame and the brick facade. Magic - 8' opening.

Now, my wife wants to sell the house....

Thanks for all the replies. I'm renting, so changing the doors isn't an option.

Got a new garage door last year-went with the recommended low clearance tracks. The top section of the door has it's own track -so there are two tracks for the door to ride in. Got about 4-5" extra clearance when open. Bought a CJ later that fall and it barely clears-talk about good timing on the door purchase.

What dude above said. Rigs are too tall.

My Toy is on 38.5" SXs, and fits in a regualr door with inches to spare. It also stays rubber-side-down more often, now.

Build it inside the garage. Drive it out. Either the door will get high enough or the truck will get low enough.
