Mine's not that tight at all, and works fine. Pull the cover off the gear box and turn the pulley by hand, it should turn smoothly. While you have the cover off, change the lube.
My belt tension is similar to what Todd posted, pretty loose and mine works fine. Weird that yours was slipping.
The plastic knobs cracked pretty quick, so I made some new ones, 1/2" bolt and nut tacked in the shaft, 3/8" rod welded to the hex head, made a cool star handle.

One was in pieces in my hand and the other was cracked...necessity is the mother of invention.
