Ive used a bosch and metabo, both fit my hands very well and had more than enough power. If you can afford the metabo, its the way to go. If not there nothing wrong with the bosch.
I would look for older used ones as opposed to buying new, we have 2 at the shop that get used regularly and work flawlessly. Both are made by black and decker.
I have a 9" from HF that works like a champ. I think I got it onsale for $35 and had a 15% off of that. I have been pleased and I would have to go through about 5 of them before I touched the price of the 'name brand' ones to which that will not happen. It has good power, I can't slow it down even trying. Shit, buy 2 if you think that one is going to break and leave you stranded during a project.
The HF would be fine for me. But the big grinder at my fathers shop went out (it was and older Craftsman) while working on my Jeep. I need to replace it with something comparable that will last for both of us.
Any advise between the 3 listed above? They are all in the $160 - $200 range. I'm willing to spend an extra 20-40 bucks to get a better grinder within this range.
So buy him 2 cheap (read HF) ones. I don't brag about my HF tool collection (this is supposed to be a joke but looking around, I see a lot of orange) but this is one of my better buys from them.
Get the Dewalt D28499. It's excellent and priced right. I think there are a couple of places that sells them for $109/ea if you buy six. A bit less power than the Metabo but still very strong and they're super durable. I grind on 4140 plate with 9" 36grit ceramic soft pads with one for hours at a time and they hold up fine. Anyone who tears one up grinding on a Jeep is abusing it, it's not the grinder.
