My version of a tube notcher

So I got really tired of notching tube with the plas and a grinder so I decided to build a nice notcher. I based it off the JMR one. I used 1" IHCP shaft with Timkin HD roller bearings. I also turned a aluminum bronze bushing for the 3/4"-6 acme screw on the clamp. I think I have about $25 in bearings, and I had the rest laying around at work. I think I had about 14 hours into building it. It will do up to a 2" tube. Works awesome.

Very nice! Clean and simple. Did you make the threads yourself? Acme threads?

Thats cool. How did you do the pivot? I have all of the stock to make one, and have it all drawn up except for the pivot just need to find the time to do the machining.

No, I had the acme screw laying around at work and we had a tap to make the nut. I could of made both center pointing them but that would of taken forever.

The pivot is just a 1/2" bolt with the head cut off welded flush with the top plate. Nothing over the top like the JMR bearing one. I did not feel that was necessary.

I think it's cool. Add degree markings for uber cool.

I need to modify my Notchmaster. Bothers me that my bearing block is fixed and can't be slid back. Looks like you can move your bearing block back, but you've gotta completely remove 4? bolts?

Ya, remove 4 bolts then I can slide it back. Both the bearing and clamp have 3 positions each. I might ad degree marks later.

Nice.

I'm building the same tube vise, but I'm going to mount it in place of the compound on my lathe.
