Brake line inverted flare gone too far....

I was wondering if it is possible to create a bad inverted flare by pushing the die to the point where it is bottomed out? I use a hand held hydraulic flaring tool and it makes aesthetically perfect inverted flares, but i would say that one out of three leaks under pressure. Any ideas?

This is the tool i have:

the only times i have had fittings not seal is if i managed to split the hard line or made the flare to big by have to much line sticking out of the die.

I've got that exact kit, and ever since I started using it, I've never had a fitting leak.

I also have the same kit and use it in my job on a regular basis and it made perfect flares everytime. Only thing I can guess is your either not getting a straight cut of tube of the wrong stick out of tube.

Hmmm. I wonder what the hell is going wrong then. I guess part of it is that I use a tubing cutter rather than a hacksaw. That being said, I always chamfer the inside of the tubing with a counter sink and then file the end of the tube so that it is clean and bur free. I guess I will keep trying to figure it out.

What type of tubing material are you using? I have been using the steel lines with the coating.

Also, if you swear by the hacksaw method, what TPI are you using? I have never been able to cut the tubing without murdering the ends

I have a tube cutter I keep in the kit, it's all I ever use.

Are you cleaning the coating off the area of the tube to be flared? I've had that problem at work with the coated stuff. Also keep in mind it's allot more powerful then a regular flare tool. Don't force the die too far.

I finally ended up figuring out what I was doing wrong. After the initial flare, I was pushing the cone adapter in too far. This created a scenario where some would seal, but others wouldn't. I looked at a brake line I got from NAPA and theirs had an inverted flare that was barely inverted. I tried that with my tool and it worked first try. Hopefully this helps someone.

Not to hijack this thread, but would someone be willing to post some pics of some tube you flared to show what is "too much" inversion or not enough inversion?
