Driveway staining/sealing/protectant questions
I've searched. I've spent all morning reading old posts.
I'm putting a driveway in for my shop. The current driveway is that brown/tan exposed aggregate concrete with pebble in it. The supposedly fancy crap. Well I hate that crap, and am getting a nice normal broom finished standard "smooth" concrete, compared to exposed agg. Questions: 1)I would like to acid stain the concrete I'm pouring brown. This should help blend it with the old driveway so it doesn't stand out as much. Has anyone done this with a driveway before? And have first hand knowledge/experience? 2) Should I say screw the color stain, and just seal the hell out of it? And if so, what kind of sealant will protect the driveway from tire marks? Again, first hand experience only please. Yeah I know, I'm posting up everyday with new questions. It's not like you're working anyways. ![]()

I think everyone is tired of your stupid questions.
![]() But seriously, when you ask for first hand knowledge, you knock out 95% of people who would normally respond and pretend they know what their talking about. If I were you, id rephrase your question and allow 2nd and 3rd hand knowledge too.

Some days my brain works, others, not so much. Like anyone in here is actually working anyways. I prefer not to have 2nd or 3rd hand knowledge on this one. Quote:
Plus most of those forums are for guys that don't do what we do. Meaning abuse the living crap out of everything. I figure here most people know what will withstand a wheeler's abuse versus what looks pretty.

I have done this on slabs before so I do have first hand knowledge/experience. The staining portion was really easy although all the slabs I've done were not a broom finish. I just put a fresno on them and then left it til it was ready for stain. I've also done stamped which turned out real nice.
The sealer I used was a rebadged product at a local construction supply house called Jobsite Supply. I know it was an acrylic high solids sealer (30% I believe). It was called JS Super 30. It was super easy to put down and blend it all together without getting lap marks from the roller. The temperatures need to be realtively cool to put this stuff down though as the xylene will evaporate out quickly and not let the solids penetrate the concrete properly. The nice thing about this type of sealer is, if you seal it and then notice that you are getting moisture into the slab after it has dried, you can simply spray it with xylene to reliquify the solids and reroll it. I did my patio 2 years ago and the sealer is now starting to flake and show signs of wear. I'm going to pressure wash it and reroll it some time this summer if I ever get a free minute. |

One other thing you may want to look into if you are just looking for a fairly uniform color is a tinted sealer. Same product I mentioned above but they add some color to it. Then you'd be done in one shot. If you are looking for the marbled look you will want to use an acid base stain.

There is a stain manufacturer on PBB.
Because it is a driveway, you could create a DIY stain. You can use fertilizer to get the brown color. We have done it commercially before the stains were available. Iron oxide is a good place to start. Here is one site: http://www.stainedfloor.com/ Do some digging and you will find more. I would not DIY in my house or a high end patio, but on a driveway, I would do it in a heartbeat. As for the sealer, a high solids acrylic looks great - just be sure you know whether it can be done when you want to do it (some are not advised before 6 weeks of curing)
