12 ton press good enough?

yes i suck at the search apparently because i know this has been covered so please bare with me here. i need to setup some 14 bolt gears and install a set of trunnion bearing eliminators in my hi steer arms, i can get this http://www.harborfreight.com/garage-...ess-33497.html for around the same price i could pay someone with a press to do it for me so i figure i should just buy it so next time i need to press something i wont have to shell out any $$

12 ton strong enough to do basic things like i listed?

Get the 20T. 14BFF pinion crush sleeve can be a bitch.

Go ahead and spend a little extra on the 20ton. It has a welded frame, whereas the 12ton's frame is bolted together with grade 5 bolts. Plus, you will have that extra 8ton when you need it.

will the 12 ton do it? or just pay someone? yes i want the 20 ton so i could dimple stuff but cant$ right now.

I posted a 25% for new years in the HF coupon thread. In a prior post, I posted a link to the HF thread at slickdeals. 20%s off and free items. Plus the ITC coupons which they've accepted with the top torn off (remove ITC).

[edit] I just ran the ads and the after new years has the 12t for $99 (as a coupon). I don't see the 20t anywhere.

I usually try to not hold up a pinion support by the flange like that.

Me too! Granted I probably spend way too much time building tooling for my presses.

The 12-ton presses are junk. There is a huge difference between the 12 and 20 ton units.

My 12-ton collapsed the upper beam and the movable beam disassembling the spline on a driveshaft

Both of my 20-ton presses get used almost daily and do what I need them to do.

I wish I had spent the extra $$ for the 20T press but at the time it was all I could do. It gets most jobs done for me but I have run into it's limitations many times in both size and strenght. So far it has a bent cross bar, has been welded together to keep from getting out of rack, the press shaft has bent, the jack shit the sheets, and I've added casters.

All that being said, make the drive to the store, get a coupon, and buy the 20T or build it yourself but chances are you can't build it for what you could buy one for.

Only when trying to crush the crush collar. If you are only removing the pinion, then you should be ok.

Those 14 bolt crush sleeves are a PITA, and I always use the press start to get it crushed.

just removal
Basically everything EXCEPT the crush sleeve, I had a machinist/ring&pinion guy do that for me - $15 dollars well spent

We have a pneumatically controlled valve with quick connects on the air hoses so you can be as far away as you want from the 80 ton press for a reason, I was straightening the forks from the bobcat this morning and I was a good 15' away.
