Short Course buggy build

Thought I post my build, I haven't seen any here yet. I raced the east coast stuff like Line Mountain in the 4cyl 4x4 in the past and decided to do a build similar to a SCORE class 9 buggy. It started it's life as a rail buggy.

My class has a 1600cc engine size limit with little mods, dual port heads etc. I just finished up the new shock hoops and have most of the body panels done. The panels are aluminum.

After I get the panels back on I'll be moving to the interior, dash, wiring, rear fire wall, seat frames, and adding an upper and lower bar at the window net. Running wise it is mostly done, only safety stuff to add to finish, fuel cell vent, Emergency Battery disconnect, belts, etc. I'll also be redoing the rear of the buggy to make the bumper to specs.

If anyone has a set of wide 5 rims I could use them, please PM me.

Glad to get more buggies out there! I think that if you get a rulebook for the sanctioning body you will race with, you may need to add more equipment. Most promoters require 4 wheel brakes and at least a roll bar diagonal. Roof diagonal and roof panels as well. Make sure it is safe .

Yea it needs a lot of work yet. I have most of the parts. Our stock class only allow drum brakes and I'm putting on front disks so that alone will move me up a class. As I said, still a lot of work. I'm adding another upper bar, window nets, rear fire wall, dual rear shocks, tree rails, etc. It's not near done but I did get to take it out a bit today for some fun in stead of shop time.

Thanks, I'm a bit north of Harrisburg but if you find something I'll make a run for them. It has adapters on the rear now and I want to take them off.

Not much new and exciting to add, I'm working on the dash now and cleaning up the wiring. I ordered my new front disk setup yesterday. I also ordered some PVC sheeting to use for the rear splash guards at the rear tires.

Question...

The current wiring has the "idiot light" on the charge line, It is normally on until the engine starts then goes out. I am concerned that if the filament in the bulb breaks it will not charge and I wouldn't know it was not charging because the light is off when running and charging.

Can I just put a gauge in place of this light? If I am understanding the wiring correctly this wire that the light is on is just an exciter voltage for the generator? I know it is not the preferable place to put the gauge but I would notice if the voltage dropped on the gauge.

EDIT: found that the buggy was not wired right, there was a wire missing, The charge wire. I'll have to start from scratch and see if it charges.

If its a GM alternator, it needs to see the resistance of the bulb to charge. You can get around it by wiring a resistor inline on that wire and do away with the bulb.

It's a generator and from what I've found the only thing that light will tell you is if the belt comes off. It was not charging before and the idiot light acted like it was. I did get it rewired and started but still have to add the return wire and check the charging.

I got the tree rails on today. I'm waiting for a few more parts then it's off to the fab shop to finish the rest of the tube bending. I need to put on some upper and lower door bars, and the rear engine cage/ bumper. I also need another bar at the shocks so I can mount my dual shocks. Then put the rest of the skin on. After the rear tubing is finished I can mount the shocks, one coil, and one regular on each side. I should be ready for test and tune day.

Looking good!

I raced a buggy once many years ago. It was a hoot!

Sometimes I think I should go to something like this for simplicity's sake. It probably isn't any cheaper than what I'm doing, but a lot less stuff and mass.

You'd think it would be cheaper but take away the motor and transmission and you pay the same for parts like shocks, seats. safety equipment as the big guys.

Looking good, are you gunna race in the 3.5 miler in June? I'm building my first buggy, new to offroading. I'm hoping mine is gunna be done by June but its alot of work/cash. I decieded to strip all the paint off of the frame (wirewheel). It takes alot of work but im hoping that it will look good and be worth the effort. Then im going to build it up. Are you running modified? I have a bus torsion which means +2". I was hoping to run stock, because of lower budget and might actually have a chance.

Yes I'll be at the 3.5 miler, I'll be running modified. I'm also going up to Al's and see what it does on the short course there. Make sure you have the rules for Line Mountain, there are a few new ones this year. The club site is down right now and I'm trying to get a copy so I can host it so people will know about the changes.

A few updates, not much time left.

I got some more tubing work done and upper mounts made for my dual rear shock setup. I also made some frames for my window nets out of 1/2 conduit. I'm going to put pins on them so they lift off and a snap on the bottom to hold them down. My idea behind this is to gain some room, the nets were rubbing on my arm. I can also run with them off when trial riding. The net is not in the right position in the photo but that's the idea.
Next is to get the seats and harnesses back in and the rest of the body panels on.

The list is getting smaller!

I got some smaller things done today, I finished the mounts for the dual rear shocks, Put the steering wheel quick disconnect on, mirror, and got the window net frames mounted. Still a lot to do but things are looking up.

Still racing Line Mtn this weekend?

This'll be the first one I've missed in a few years...building a new rig. Hope to be done for the 7-miler.

Cool little buggy, hope it works out well for ya!

Yes, I had planned to be gone by now but seen that some parts I've been waiting for were on the truck for delivery today. Looks like I'll be there at the last minute so I can get this stuff done. I only live about 25 minutes from the track.

It wouldn't be fun if you didn't rip shit apart at the last minute to change things. I usually go up Thursday afternoon and get my camp set up then take the car up later in the day. You have to get there early for the good camping spots since that place is getting so crowded these days.

Racing June didn't exactly pan out like it was supposed to for me either. lol I will still be up there spectating though, just look for the teen with the jew fro walking around the track, yep that's me. More time and more budget i guess. Always more to learn with these little things. What are you running cv wise? Was looking at some good 930's but the price of $250 a piece was a bit crazy and i refuse to go with cheap EMPI CRAP. Will be running bus with chromoly axles. Three rib tranny. Was talking to Madara about an engine, prolly a built 1641. Fox or King on rear(1 per side). The other rear will prolly end up being Ranchos as with the front.

Depending upon who long it takes LM4W to get the site up again i may just end up talking to TJ about getting a rule book.

I have a copy of the buggy rules for stock and modified. http://tubebuggies.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=9

I'm pretty much stock but the front disk brakes will move me up a class when I get them on.

I didn't get finished with the rear shocks and a few other small things so I didn't make it for the 3.5 miler. All I have to do is get some bolts for the shocks, put the harnesses back in and the roof on and I'm ready to go. I'll be going up in the morning and run the short course just to try it out.

Almost done with this round of mods. I still have to put on the front disk brakes and the rack and pinion steering.

But i just made a buncha videos 15-30sec's long. You going to be at the coal bucket? I should be up there if i can get off. If you need any help look me up or pm me. Always looking to learn new stuff. What kind of shocks are you running on the rear?

I will be at the Coal Bucket Race in July. Right now I am experimenting with rear shocks. I am running a dual valve and a single valve. I will be testing it running both then one at a time. I most likely will end up will a dual valve and a coil over for the Line Mountain races. If my thoughts are correct, I'll be running the setup that is on it now for the short courses, drags, and hill climbs.

No drags or Hillclimb anymore.

On rear http://www.kingshocks.com/products/p...formance-race/ The smoothe with remote reservoir. One per side.

The other 2 in the rear will be Rancho. Until i can get better Fox or King. Or something worth while.

Jersey Shore has no drags or hill climb? I'm planning on a trip to Gravelramma also in August. There are also a few other hill climbs in the area but I'm not sure if they have a buggy class. I hope they reopen Big Al's, it's a shame about the insurance cost making it not possible for them to hold races there any more.

EDIT: Hmmm, what did I get myself into? Looks like from what I can see, the fasted lap was posted by a v8 4x4 buggy at 18:09 and second was a buggy in my class at 18:32. This was the 3.5 miler.

Got some more done today.

Just thought I'd add a photo of my grandson/jack man.
