I'm right on the other side of the river in ulster county not far from kingston. Looks like I may have found a source of diesels if I need them. I've previously worked for benz NA but never got too involved with the older chassis except I keep getting drafted to service them when they come into my buddys shop. I know too much out the older SEL's and SEC and SLC than I choose too.
I can however still get factory parts at good prices which is nice. |

Small world. I just talked to my buddy tonight, and he quickly measured the top set of holes in the back of the OM617 and they appeard to be the same width apart.... I should be out there next week to pickup the motor, and possibly test fit the 404 adapter plate and flywheel to the 617.

Update on my question. I confirmed that the information in one of the first posts is right. Using the 404 backing plate with the locating dowel holes drilled out slightly, the 404 backing plate will bolt up directly to the 617.
The flywheel is a direct bolt on, however the 404 flywheel is a 6 hole, and the 617 crank is 12. The flywheel will be drilled tomorrow to accept 12 bolts, instead of the standard 6. After it is drilled, it will be balanced to match the assembly that came off of the 617 originally. From my initial measurements, the spacing of the flywheel from the adapter plate is within 2mm, so depth into the bellhousing, clutch linkage, input shaft and other related bits should not need to be modified at all. I will set the diesel and 404 starters side by side, compare them, then clearance the block as necessary to make one of them work. With the EGR system, vacuum pump, and AC compressor removed, the OM617 is a very compact motor, and should work very well in my application.
