A/T problem
I know most of you boys hate autos and I'm not especially fond of them but after the third knee surgery it kills me to clutch all day. That being said here is the story.
'92 4Runner V6 with AT of course currently 173K mi on the clock. My trans started going out awhile back (poor shifting when cold and a bad vibration from the rear carrier bearing). So I picked up a trans from a fellow PBB member. The trans only had about 3K on a rebuild (truck was totaled). So I throw the trans in. Now at this time my truck was completely stock running 31's and factory 4.88's. Low and behold the truck runs better than it has since I owned it...fantastic. The trans was not out of an ADD equiped vehicle and I didn't realize this until I had already gotten rid of the old trans so rather than trying to replace the wiring and sensors I just changed hubs and defeated the ADD. After running like that for awhile I did some suspension work, put on a set of 33's and had 5.29's and a detroit put in. Coming home from having the gears and what not done the trans temp light kicks on (I was running it pretty hard...80mph, AC on, 90+ degrees out). I take the truck home, replace the fluid with synthetic and install a small aux trans cooler. No more heating problems. That was when the real problems began. Every once in a while (say 3 times a week or so) when I either stop or go from reverse to drive it feels like it doesn't shift into first. It feels like it is in a higher gear. I push the gas and the trans just slips as I move slowly forward then after a few seconds it will down shift and I'm off. I have tried to figure out if it is a cold/hot thing or what but I can't establish and pattern. Now the other thing it has started doing that really bothers me. I will be going down the fwy at around 70 mph or so and the truck starts to studder jumping between 2850RPM and 3300RPM. If feels like the converter is locking and unlocking. It doesn't do it all the time just on ocassion. Today for example....I drive 90mi at 80mph and it is fine. The truck sits for 7 hrs or so. I jump in it drive 55mi at 75mph and truck sits for 1 hr. I jump back in it to come home and it starts doing it after I am on the fwy for 5 minutes. It appears that this has just started since the weather has gotten cold/wet. I'm sure that there is a sensor on the trans that tells it to lock the converter. Could I be getting moisture in this sensor or the connector that would cause this?? I don't really know jack squat about autos. I think the problem is electrical because of the fact that the trans was out of a '91 Pickup and since it was installed the ADD did not work (as described above) and my backup lights don't work. So I'm thinking that I have some compatibility issues or something but I don't understand while they would have taken this long to show up. I quit typing because this is getting a little bit long.....thank you advance for you advice. |

Check the kickdown cable and fluid level.
Mine was screwed up so it shifted hard, overheated (with a cooler), and prematurely unlocked the converter. Was I the one that picked up your old tranny?? I remember getting it from someone in Tracy. |

The auto behind my 93 V6 does the exact same thing. There is a small difference though. Mine only does it when wheeling in the mud. It has something to do with moisture. I have been systematically going through my grounds, connections and ignition siliconing everything. As for the on highway slipage (torque converter?) I personally find that our tannies are horendously sensitive to fluid level. I found mine only did this when it was overfilled. The problem is it is very hard to get the level perfect. It's like a difference of 1/4 a litre to being right on and drasticaly overfilled. I personally hate these trannies.
