Wheeling with Medusa!

Wheeling with Medusa!

Ok the rest of my photos are up now: http://www.metaltechcage.com/bend_or_bust.htm
My dig. cam died half way in on the trip so most of the shots are frame grabs from the DV.

Jacks link to his photos are in his Bend or Bust link: http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showt...4&pagenumber=2

Madusa, Jack Rice invited us to head over to Bend/Redmond OR to try out a newly discovered canyon full of rocks. The plan was to meet up on Sat. 15th with two other clubs, one I don’t recall and the other was Extreme4x4 out of Seaside OR. (From the OR coast) We had an open invitation to park and run on some private property and try out a close buy rock garden of lava rocks. (talk about grip!)

Jack graciously opened up his home for us and insisted we stay at his place. I thought the guy must be nuts, but he did meet most of us at the Cruisin’ The Woods 03’ so he knew what he was getting into. He did indicate his wife was out of town that weekend, or she left town knowing we were coming I'm not sure what order that was in. I myself was stoked to get a chance to see the famous Mad Scientist Cruiser Laboratory, and his monster “Trudgy” in person! Jack also indicated his 20 acres would not have a problem parking a few tow rigs w/loaded trailers. I guess not!

Friday Nov. 14th
Five Cascade Cruisers members, Desmond his wife Gale, Supper Dave, Travis, and I along with a guest of Supper Daves met up in Gresham, OR. We made the 2.5hr trip over Mt. Hood Oregon and down into Central Oregon to the small town of Redmond. The Mt. Pass was unusually warm and snow free so the drive over was event free. (Ok Travis lost his trailer lights half way, but a new fuse and a ground wire later no problem.)

After Super Dave took us on a round about tour of the country side near Jack’s house we pulled in about 5:30 PM well after dark. As we pulled up to the house we saw Cascade Cruisers Kevin’s new tow rig and five day old trailer already there. This guy got a call from work the day before saying “We know you are leaving early on Friday, but we really need you to run out to Redmond to service a customer!” Ahhhh so he got paid to drive out there AND the company bought his diesel! Sheeesh what a brake. Anyway I recognized the tubed back end of Eric-D-lux’s 40 sitting on a trailer next to Kevins. We pored out of the tow rigs and were greeted by Jack, Kevin, Eric and Eric’s buddy.

All excited to see Jack’s shop I walked though the open bay door….. BOOM I forgot what he had sitting inside. Dam you guys have to see this thing in person, Madusa’s Trudgy is amazing. Not only the shear size of this sucker, but a just how it is put together. Unbelievable. He has left no detail undone and the workmanship is amazing. Ok so my spy Trudgy shots get a thread of their own!

We all piled in to trucks and headed to town for a crowed Mexican restaurant. Jack had called ahead and we were able to get our group of 11 seated in short order. (right about the time our beverages showed up in the bar, as usual for any restaurant wait) After a great dinner we headed back to Jacks and people unloaded gear for the night. Jack put us all up, the majority of the crew took the large guest room above his shop. Some how I managed to get my own room in the main house across the hall from Desmond and his wife. Once again Jack really went out of his way to make us all comfortable and we truly felt like guests in his beautiful home.

Kevin brought a copy of the Hauln’and Crawl’n DVD so we all set up shop in Jacks game room and got amped up for the next day of wheeling.

Saturday 15th
Up at 5:50 AM I found Jack had a pot of coffee up for everyone before we headed out for breakfast in town. Todd Winkler, Travis’s brother also a CC member who recently relocated to that area and joined us for the day in his FJ-40. After a quick breakfast we met up with the crew from Extreme4x4 in the parking lot of a furniture store. Here we ran into more LandCruiser locals and Pirate member Todd (Slacker on POR I think). After kicking the tires on a few rigs we headed out to private property just outside of town to unload the trailers. “Bob” owned the property and obviously was into wheeling with a RTI ramp and a number of large home made obstacles by his house. The seen quickly turned into the makings of a small rally as trucks got unloaded, pre-flights where being made and the unmistakable sound of welding was coming from a few rigs over.

Scott with Extreme4x4 did a brief drivers meeting and we where off. The days plan was to head up the road to a relatively new rock crawl up a small hill. From there we would head out to this new canyon that recently was opened up on BLM land. This canyon was promised to be a full blown rock trail, and it was with change to spare.

The near by rock crawl was lava rock (most of what you find in Central OR) and had tons of grip. By the time I pulled up Eric dlux was already smashing the skinny peddle and steaming his way across the rocks! He had a radiator leak that was somewhat intermittent so a trail of steam went with him. Eric took advantage of his 1 ton running gear and hummer rims by wringing the HP out of his motor! He sure did quite a bit of tube work to his rig and it looks great in person. Cascade Cruiser Kevin was next up and chose the duel x-fer case route and crawled his way up the rocks. Scott with Extreme got everyone to bunch up for the traditional group shot. I think we had 25 trucks for the shot. We all had some fun on the hill and worked our way to the top. It was wide and about three + trucks could be on the hill at one time. I passed a Ford ranger right as his right hub blew, sucker was loud! Near the top was a good lip on the left that had a good line out of a hole, this cost me my tail pipe as I came down on it folding it inward. Once at the top I got some DV of the crew coming up including Jack in Medusa. (Medusa is another meticulously built truck!) Once at the top we took a side road down and we broke away from the other group to make a run for the new canyon. Jack knew the way and had walked the trail before.

The canyon!
Holy cow, we gots rocks! This trial reminds me of South Dakotas, “Buzz Worms” trail. Lots of big rocks one after another, good stuff to hang you up and can open your quarter panel. Jack parked Madusa outside the trail, he previously stated he would walk it and watch us run it. One of the cool things is a dirt road runs into the small box canyon as well. So it is easy to go in and watch, or drag a dead rig out on. (in my case limp out on…read on!) Staying to the right we hung on the big rocks and slowly picked our way. At one point we had to make a tight turn left and down then make a sharp turn right squeezing through two large rocks. Kevin powered/crawled though taking advantage of his 38’s and properly backspaced rims, giving him good turning capabilities. Next up was me, as I dropped down for the right turn through the big two rocks my back end dropped in before I could turn into the exit. I now had about 4” to move forward or back in. I did my best Austen Powers turning moves, backing and going forward. The crew went ahead and put on the hard hats and got into Range Rover mode and stacked me a HW of rocks. Using the front left locked up on a stock 79’ birf. I pulled the truck up and over the large rock. (Debate would come later if this took out the birf.) Once through Jessie in “Lil’fish” crawled through and handled it much better than I did. Once through he was handed the parts that came off the truck.

Next thing I knew I see Medusa coming up the trail! Jack obviously decided we were not going to be the only ones having fun. He piloted the 40 right on through and our five 40’s where off down the trail. We found a few alt. routs that increased the challenge and added some body damages to our rigs. This included what seemed to be the first trail dmg. to Medusa! (Ok we did decide Jack would most likely go home and work though the night getting it back to were it looked perfect again!) I won’t mention my name as the spotter as he took that line…

We pressed on past an early 90’s toy trayback being towed out with a dead CPU. As we pressed on Kevin found a line though a box and with some work spanked it. As I worked my way through my front left birf completely let go. I was down. The box was too tight to back out of so we tried winching me out. My plan was to limp back to the dirt road and get it on the trailer. Air tools back in the shop sounded much better than a tight spot in a rock box with deep loose sand/dirt between the rocks. With the winch not being able to get me out due to the angle I was in, I had to change it.

The bad to worse:
In the process of changing it I started to go into the hub from the back side. (pull the felt plats and a steering arm and the outer asmb. comes right off sans any clips on the birf.) This almost proved to be mechanically fatal with my trunion barring separating like the enjoy doing at times. Without a spare among us, (*&*I normally have one in a spars pack!) I stopped and went through the hub like normal. The bell was split and the star and cage where small chunks of scrap. When I tried to get the new birf. on I discovered the outer splines where garfed by the bell holding together keeping all the blow apart guts inside on the axel. No problem Kevin had a spare axel so just change it right? Not exactly, one of the chunks of scrap went up inside the closed knuckle and smashed the metal housing of the oil seal into the axle. The axel would not budge! Arrrrrrrrgh. At this point I pack it in. I sifted though the oil/grease and dead birf parts for the random roller bearings from the dmg. trunion barring. I hand built the trunion back together and bolted down the steering arm. Out the back side came six of the rollers and the cage pushed though into the race. I thought screw it and kept on going. If it worked fine, if not then I would have to go into town for a new barring. I put the hub back together w/o a birf. And hoped we could pull it out with a new plan of winching the guys hatched. The damaged truinon held together and worked enough to allow me full right and partial left steering. After multiple resets with the snatch block I was free and backed down out of the box over the 3.5-4 foot lip going into it. Thanks to Super Dave helping with tools, Desmond with parts hand off’s, Jack with shop rags (I owe you a pack!) and Super Daves buddy working the winch I got out. Shortly before I got it out of the rocks the rest of the crew that was on the first rock crawl stared showing up. I was a nice spectacle as they took the bypass around the box. In typical wheeling fashion I got ask if I needed any parts or tools, unfortunately no one had a spare trunion.

I missed out seeing what was above the box but I understand it kept on going, and has the potential to be extended! Next time. I watched my front left tire wag around on the trail as I 3x4’rd it out but it held together. Near the top of the dirt road out I saw Eric’s rig on the trailer with a damaged High Angel drive line. Bummer. Once I pulled on to my trailer I let out a huge sigh of relief! By the time I had the truck anchored down and had MRE heating up (it was 4ish and I had not had lunch) in the chemical heater the rest of our crew showed up. To my surprise Madusa was on a strap coming back in! Apparently flexing over some large rocks the mechanical fan took a chunk out of the radiator. Since Jack drove the rig from his house, Jessie volunteered to take his truck off the trailer so Madusa could be taking back to the shop. Jessie did the dive in the dark and cold night back to jacks shop, with soft doors and a bikini top! (Nice guy!) We said good buy to Jack has he could not join us for dinner in town. (Probably had it with us by now!) We met up at a restraint Jack recommended and had a great dinner before heading back to Portland. (Waitress flicked Jessie all kinds of crap it was great)

Thank you again Jack for your hospitality and sharing the new areas of rocks! I know we will be back to fully run that canyon again! Mog’s or at least the set of Longs I have had sitting in the shop will be on my rig by then!

Oh yeah, nice terrain. Looks like fun was had by all.

Looks like I won't be able to make it to the cascade cruisers meet tonight, plus I won't even get my rig until saturday. I look forward to meeting you in January, later.

Thank you for all of the kind words, Mark. It was a fun trip and I hope we can do it again. BTW, when I pulled the radiator, I discovered that the fan cut through the lower hose, not the core, so it was an easy and inexpensive fix.

Cool deal, good to hear and nice brake! Did the fender flare grow back?

BTW: The video shot from the fender cam came out great and will be shown at the CC X-Mass party on the 6th.

This book was not the plan but just kind of came out that way. Once I was done writing it I thought the same thing, but all we/I had for photos were low res. dig. (2.1 MP and the DV frame grabs) Other wise I would

When we run the trail again I will make a point to snag the Nikon and shoot 35mm too. It would make a good write up on its own, for that matter so would Jacks Trudgy!
