Ranger Submodels
Can anyone give me a list of what the XLT and other models designate. What exactly comes in the XLT or other packages, specifically the '91 XLT. For example the '99 montero sports are: DL 2 wheel drive; XL 4x4; XLS adds AC, cruise, and remote entry; Limited adds electric rear locker, leather seats and sun roof.
The main reason I ask is I believe my ranger has some sort of locker or limited slip device. It is very jerky on corners in 4, and I have tried climbing up piles of construction dirt in my neighborhood at various angles and have not had any spinout. I even climbed a little boulder with one front tire while the other was in soft loose dirt and had no spin out. I dont know about the rear though, I wasnt brave enough to back up the boulder to try it. But I believe there is some sort of traction device in the front. I havent been able to completely lift a tire either to find out. Anyway does the '91 XLT come with any sort of locker or limited slip device? It appears to be lifted as well, was that done aftermarket? Hopefully I can get ahold of the original owner and find out that way, but i havent had any luck with that yet.

it differs greatly.
l/s's are not part of any trim level, it's usually just a add-on option. And yes the l/s front diff was optional for quite a while. lock the hubs, just the front up and spin one side. if the both turn the same direction, there is probably some form of l/s in there. another easy way to tell is just look at the tag on the dif. it'll give you the gear ratio and if it had a l/s from the factory. in all honesty, you should go hang out at www.therangerstation.com they can tell you everything you need to know about your ranger, as it's a bit out of the focus of this particular forum..

XLT is an interior upgrade option which basically gave you the better radio and cloth seats. Ford loves individual options for the $$$$ but will offer packages. with the most commonly chosen ones. if your curious about a l/s in the rear then look @ the door code & compare to the list of codes listed here or crawl under the truck and look @ the tag on the axle. or finally lift it up and see what happens when you spin the tires.
factory height will be a 2" block in the back, and will have a piece sticking out for the bumpstop to hit on. you can compare your tire size to the list here and see where you fall in the list factory will fit 30's fairly well you can squeeze by w/ 31X10.5 but will scrub on flex or full turn all tire fittment depends on wheel offest as well.

For the axle code, if it's a letter and a number, it's got a rear limited slip, if it's a letter and 2 numbers, it's LS in both ends, if it's 2 numbers, it's open in both ends.
