Winch mount/ Towbar mount
I am planning on making 2 different mounts, one for my winch, and one for my tow bar. I am just wondering if I am forgeting something before I cut.
First off, the front x member has a piece of .095 bar stock welded to the front of it. 3 of the holes are drilled out and sleeved with some 7/8" OD schedule 80 pipe. It was welded in the front, but I cant get my grinder to the 2 outside holes out back, so its not welded. Heres my plan. I want to drill and sleeve 2 vertical holes in the front x member for my winch. I dont have a body lift so I have to cut the rad support. I was thinking of also putting a piece of .120 stock inbetween the lower radiator mount holes, and welding it to the rad support. the winch will sit on a piece of 4" angle iron welded to a piece of 4" stock. This will have a piece of 2x2x.120 wall welded to it, that will be sleeved and bolted to the front x member (the 3 existing holes). I will also brace up the winch mount some more, but I think i can get that part. What I am wondering is if cutting the bottom support out of the radiator support, and replacing it with .120 wall flat stock will cut it. Or will I have to move the winch out about 1.5" to clear the stock lower support in the radiator support? Question 2: I have a smitty built tow bar I want to put on the front of the truck. Problem is its wider than the front of the frame. I need to get a piece of 2" somethign or other to bolt to the frame (planning on using those 3 existing holes, and also welding some .25" plate on top to tie into the other holes for the winch). I just dont know what material I should use. Should I use 3/8" flat stock? .5" stock? 1x2 .25 wall, 2x2 .25 wall or? I am also planning on welding some .25 or 3/8" plate (not sure wich to use) straight out to mount the tow bar to, and am planning on using some .25" plate to triangulate the sides. What I dont know is if I should triangulate the outer mount side of the mount too, or if I should just weld it to the side of the piece that gets bolted to the frame (this entire tow bar mount is going to unbolt). If I am unclear (I always am) ask. Otherwise, what do you think? I know people cut the rad support around the steering box with no problems, so i dont see how this would be much different.
