Homemade Cowl Hood/Snorkel System - pics

Alright, this is for us poor men/students who can't afford to buy a $240 snorkel system or any other units because of the $$$ flow. I started this idea a long time ago but just got around to starting it.

My plan is:

Make a nice cowl hood that is small enough to fit a Toy hood
Make it a cowl induction/snorkel
the cowl part isn't as important as the snorkel, this is explained later
the snorkel part will be a hole in the hood, also explained
must be made by me and be cheap!

Ok, now to explain I run a Weber 40 with adaptor on my 83 pickup, so it's already about 1/2" away from the hood. That's good! I will be ditching the Downey air filter setup and making my own 1/8" plate for that. I will be using weather stripping on the hood so when I slam it down, it seals the intake system and will not allow water to come in even if the engine is complete under. Of course, the carb is on the passengers side, so how will I still make the cowl center? Simple, offset the plate The snorkel part will be on the passengers side of the cowl and probably only use 1/2 of the actual cowl induction area if that makes any sense. Progress might be a little slow, but it will have a nice finish. I will most likely use some plastic funnel-shaped plastic on the hood, bolted down and with some silicone sealant at the top. On the bottom, that's where the weather stripping goes.

Now, some of you might be confused how this works. So I've made a little drawing to show WTF I'm talking about

Here 'tis:

Also, the sides will be tilted out and the front will have a "dovetail". One more thing: There will be "lips" on the outsides of this cowl. They will block the rain and water from coming into the setup. The top part of this cowl will be longer on top so no rain has a chance of entering. I still have to decide on an air filter but I will use one.

Here's what I've gotten cut out so car. Plasma is goooooood

(and no, that's not a LARGER basketball )

if your going under water and water runs up the hood won't it make a ses-pool and go straight down your hood into your motor?...not trying to be a dick but good luck welding that 1/8' to the 16 gauge hood with out warping it...trust me i practiced on an old hood i had and i'm a fabricator for a living and it warped and oil canned like crazy

Nope, not welding the cowl to the hood. It will have tabs on the inside of the cowl, hidden

Yes, water CAN overflow onto the hood and get into it, but I don't go into THAT much water. Besides, I plan on buying some nice rubber hose to connect up if I need to go that deep. Anything deeper than my floorboards floods into my cab anyways, so I try to stay away from stuff that deep.

Now, if I blast through a waterhole while going up a local trail I might get water splashed up over the hood a little bit. That's where the ridges and raised sides come into play. It's not a bad design actually...

Seems like a lot of work for what basically amounts to cold-air intake. A simple piece of duct tube from a speed shop might be easier, it's what I used but on a different engine. Also, with that cowl on your hood you might be obstructing your already limited view while wheeling. I would also be concerned with rain (and snow if you lived up here, hurricanes down where you're at ). The set-up you've described does work great for drag racing though. I'm just sayin'.....

Excuse the fawked up welds...the MIG wasn't being very nice I finally got it adjusted at the end, so I'm gonna have to grind off the old welds and go over all the holes. I with my buddy wouldn't have turned off the gas 1/2 way through! I've only been welding for a few months so I'm doing decent. Gotta start somewhere

Just placed on the truck...I still have to do some trimming and get the inside tabs welded on-

I'm going to move it back as far as I can. I gotta take some measurements to see where the scoop would hit the glass.

Believe it or not that is exactly what most people do when they want a snorkel and don't want to pay Safari's price. I personally would not be caught dead with your creation on my hood but that is just my personal preference. Now realize this comes from someone with PVC all over my engine bay.

Next week are you going to demonstrate your mad fab skills and make a wing for the rear of the truck?

Yeah, 35s. They're the 16" wide Boggers I like 'em so far.

I wish you guys wouldn't judge my work before I finish it I will be putting more time into it, these are just pics someone requested. I still have a lot of trimming and grinding to do. I won't make something hack...

The snorkel part will be cut out of the hood. See the air filter in this pic, there will be a hole and a "funnel-shaped" cylinder leading up to the hood/cutout area.

I tried to draw it but it's hard to explain. Basically, when I open my hood it will look like a standard carb with no air filter on. When you look at the hood as I pop it open, you will see the air filter and how the system works. It's easier shown that said... Trust me, it will work once I get it all done

I'm not a conventional guy and I don't like being just like everyone else. What's the point in that? So my truck will look just like the next?

John - My wing is going on the cab, you douche
