Prepping the trailer for CM05 - More board CPR for now

Prepping the trailer for CM05

One more CPR thread for the board right now….

Guyute and RedTruck came over to the shop yesterday and tore in to my trailer. (I have no spare time right now!) Since I can not make it to CM05, no since in a perfectly good tow rig and trailer staying in town. Guyute is going to use it and bring his built Piggy to the ball. First order of business rip up all the rotten wood off the deck of my 5 year old BigTex trailer. They filled up the back of my Supper Duty with the rotten wood, nice. Not all the self tapping screws holding the deck came out. Out came the saz-all and the 3 lb hammers, all the wood came off! I broke out the cutting torch to slice off the frozen screws left behind but RedTruck had a better idea. Two whacks with the 3 lb snapped them off right at the base.

The next order of biz, tomorrow they are putting in the two receiver mounts I want as anchor points for a portable winch. They are also welding in the mounting points for the new LED lights and two rear drop jacks. Once this is completed it goes out for sand blast and double powder coat. New deck will then go on, then the lights. Should be better than new once it’s all done.

Guyute letting the trailer have it...

You can bedliner coat the wood on three sides to fight rot. Bottom needs to stay uncoated to let the wood breathe. Pick a light color for cool in sun.

Mark,

When I built my trailer I was in N.C. and found an old man that had 2"X12" rough-cut cypress that had been dry stored in his barn for about 50 years. Picked up some 16-footers for $25 each.

Reckon my metal will rot away before the wood will.

Hm not to many Cypress trees in Oregon. Old wood stored in barns these days seam to go to an auction. Heck even old buildings being torn down are being “dismantled” due to the massive old growth timber used to make the true measure lumber. I thought about a metal deck, however wood has some advantages. For now its just going to get pressure treated 2x6’s. I don’t want to make it too nice since it’s still a work trailer, hauling axels, motors and random Cruisers. I also prefer nicer looking trailers sitting at the trail head to be sitting next to mine.

The five year old deck was untreated what ever BigTex used, I am sure the cheapest stuff around. The PO of the trailer stored it under a large tree in tall grass so it never had a chance to dry out. Also when I took delivery of it he pulled off a bunch of old wet carpeting he had tossed on it a few months back. I am sure that also helped the rot nicely.

The powder coater I work with has twice ask me to just leave the trailer in their parking lot when I was dropping off parts. “Just leave the trailer we are going to do that too!” It just bugs them it was looking so haggard. That blown radial tire did a nice job on the wheel well!

Cruiser content: The day the guys ripped apart my trailer I needed it! I ended up barrowing a buddy’s trailer so I can pick up my newest Cruiser today. I bought a rolled 94’ FZJ80 all locked up! This thing is gona be fun! I will post up pictures once it’s at the shop.

RedTruck and Guyute came back in and finished prepping the trailer before it heads off for powder coat. (Guyute grinding and RedTruck welding) They finished the two receiver winch mounting points, LED light mounts and mounting points for rear drop jacks.
