Fordyce Work Day

Just a heads up everyone. As you all probably know, someone stole some logging equipment and dug some holes in the trail at Fordyce last year followed by snow and no possibility of repair. The loggers, by Forest Service order, felled trees to block the trail so damage and injury would not occur. Four Dice, in cooperation with Webilt, had planned a recon on May 21st with repairs done over Memorial Day weekend. With all the rain and snow it looks like this won't be possible but both our clubs have a major concern about people going up there over Memorial Day and blazing their own bypass. We are now in the process of trying to setup a combination recon/work day(or two) to create an emergency bypass, with the cooperation and approval of the Forest Service, so major damage does not occur. We hope to do this on the weekend of May 21st. Please check back here to be updated as we will probably need your help. It's gonna be real wet and messy work but is necessary to help preserve Fordyce.

Thanks,

Bret Preble

count me in if you do go up. i went through fordyce just after it was blocked off. I love the trail and would be glad to help.

Plus my truck will be done just in time, and this is a great chance to test and see if it all works.

the FS and their engineers will be headed up there on the 18th to check it out and let us know if we can perform an emergency fix. Once we find out we will be sure to pass the info along because with such short notice we are going to need all the help we can get.

That said, our club is NOT going to have any of our wheelers up there on the 21st. The trail is still VERY VERY wet and we need to try to stay away until it dries up some.

I'm going up on the 18th to meet with Mary Furney and Joe Cavez(Forest Service.) If a workable bypass can be figured out we will mobilize and hit it on the 21st. We're going to need chainsaws, come-a-longs, and a lot of muscle. As Keith said, no wheelers with the possible exception of one rig to carry the tools, is the plan to limit trail damage due to all the snow and runoff. THe work area is only about 1.5 to 2 miles in so it's an easy hike. I'll post up on the evening of the 18th so stay tuned.

It's on for the 21st. Indian Springs staging area at Eagles Lakes turn off on Hwy 80. Bout 9 to 10 am. We're rerouting the trail around the "Holes" and trying to carve some drainage to release standing water on the flat portion of the trail. After Driveline the trail is a river and after Sunrise it's still covered in snow.

Bring shovels, chain saws, water proof shoes.

Rumor ..... i say again rumor had it that someone from roseville had supposedly stole the equiptment and dug the holes to make the trail entrance more challenging in an effort to limit the rigs capable fo getting in.

Are you guys doing some more trail work later in June? also heard talk of the seting up of some barriers to prevent ass' from climbing off the trail and going up and down the creek and climbing the waterfalls like the group that post pictures on pirates last year did? just a curiosity, heard alot of grumblings about that from quite a few people who regularly run the trail.

gotta work this weekend, our project is opening, otherwise id be in and up there, chainsaws and tire chains ready.

We blocked a couple of the illegal routes during the last clean up and of course there will be more to do this year. We don't have another work day scheduled as of yet but I'm almost sure we will, both to fix stuff that will be damaged by all the water and also to wheel the trail since we're not going to get on it soon due to wet conditions and snow. Right now it's too fragile and using it will damage it but we're doing the bypass to keep poeple from messing it up even more trying to create their own. Kind of a Catch-22.

These are the "Holes." 3 or 4 feet of water and about 3 or 4 feet of mud.

Bottom of Driveline.

Typical trail shot. Nice river, huh?

I've sent out an e-mail to the club I belong to, asking for volunteers will see what happens tonight. From reading the posts above, it is safe to say I won't need my trail rig?

Don't need the trail rig. There'll be a few there that will shuttle people in and out. There'e not a whole lot of parking space at the work site anyway unless you drive off the trail, which of course we do not do, right?

Walking in is an option too. It's not too far.

Well I would like to say thanks to the Four Dice Club for setting this work day up and to Webilt 4wd Club and the Trailbusters and others who showed up to help. We got alot done, and had a fun time doing it.

As of now, the trail is open again so feel free to go enjoy it again. But please stay on the trail and follow all approved bypasses.

Thanks to everyone who showed up and worked. We got the new bypass workable but it needs more work to stabilize it so it lasts. Keep an eye open for posts for our next work day.

Yes the trail is open but Four Dice is choosing to stay off until it dries out quite a bit more. We recommend the same for everyone but realize the trail is going to get used especially Memorial Day weekend. If you're on Fordyce in the near future please take it easy on the trail, especially the new bypass. It's really wet there and overzealous driving could cause significant new damage.

If you get stuck, please go imeadiately to the winch for recovery or get a tug from a bud. This will help not to dig up the wet soil.

Look for a story of the repair effort writtin by Eric Dunn of Webilt in "In Gear" magazine.

Thanks again.

Volunteers lining the bog at the water crossing with rocks. That's Mary Furney, our Forest Service contact, hard at work right in the middle.

Volunteers removing a huge dead tree from the middle of the trail. That's Max the dog on the left and believe it or not he really did help by removing sticks and even a log about 12 inches in diameter and 2 feet long from the water crossing.

First people on Fordyce though the new bypass. Yes that's a stock Exterra! This is the area that's going to need some more work and extra care during use.
