Desert Island Disc's
So the favorite microbrew got me thinking about if I only had one beer for the rest of my life, which led to the old Tower Records DID concept. You know... you're stranded on a desert island and only have 10 CD's for the rest of your days. Rules are no more that one compilation, (greatest hits or anthology's are OK, but box sets are out.), but there is no limit on genre's or artists. You can have multiple albums from the same artist, but they each count as a choice.
If you love music, this is tougher than it seems. You'll get your 10, then you'll say, "oh I forgot X Los Angeles", or "what about Aerosmith, I don't have any Aerosmith?". Here's mine; 1. Songs in the Key of Life – The great Stevie Wonder This one almost makes a white boy from Cali like me feel like I have “Soul”, it is the greatest collection of textures, vocals and period correct lyrics I have ever heard. 2. Quadrophenia – The Who It even made a good movie! 5:15, Love Reign O’er Me, and the awesome bass line from the late great John Entwistle on The Real Me. 3. Piece of Your Soul – Storyville With Milford Milligan belting out the David Grissom written songs, and Tommy Shannon and Chris Layton picking up the pieces after SRV died, this one is on the list just because I couldn’t pick a SRV favorite. 4. Friday Night in San Francisco – Al Demerol, Pico De Lucia, John McLaughlin Recorded with only three mic's, the stunning speed of these guitar masters, and the power and passion still gives me chills. They tried this combo again, but it wasn’t the same, it must have really been something to have been there that night. 5. Sublime – 40oz to freedom. What a great party disc, especially from about track 13 on. “What is this shit on my face, oh my God, what IS that aweful smell?” I LOL everytime I hear that. And date rape is a nice little ditty as well! Poor Bradley, he OD'd before they really blew up. 6. Revolver – The Beatles Oddly this was an easy choice for me. Although I love all the other original releases, this is the one where the song writing really gelled, and of course the production values are better than the early albums. 7. The Cannonball Adderley Quintet in San Francisco – The Cannonball Adderley Quintet This one just swings. And I like the interaction with the crowd. I would love to be able to go back to the early 60’s when all the greats were playing in SF, Miles, Oscar Peterson, Bird, and of course Coltrane. But of all those guys I just like the songs from Cannonball best. 8. Let it Bleed or Exile on Main street – The Rolling Stones I think Keith was petty strung out on this one, but its’ still my favorite. But I do reserve the right to switch to Exile so that I can get Rocks Off and Loving Cup. 9. Chicken Skin Music – Ry Cooder I wore out two vinyl copies and two CD’s of this one. Great production and Ry just gettin' it with some traditional American country funk. 10. Anthology – Marvin Gaye All the best stuff, and the Tammi Terrell and Mary Wells duets too. What a shame he died so young. Doc
