Does Sierra Trek/Jeepers Jamboree have exclusive rights to Fordyce/Con when they run?
Does Sierra Trek/Jeepers Jamboree have exclusive rights to Fordyce/Con when they run?
I haven't been on a run this year yet and am dying to. My Jeep is down for another week or so and I was looking at the schedules of Sierra Trek and the Jeepers Jamboree. Can a person still run Fordyce/Con when they are scheduled to be on that trail or will you get fined etc? Can you just go around them when you get the chance? Sierra Trek is on Fordyce: 8/11-14 Jeepers Jamboree on the Rubicon: 7/28-31 & 8/5-7 I was planning on running Fordyce from 8/5-7 anyways and should be o.k., but I might want to run the Con and Fordyce when these events are being conducted. Please advise. thanks, Troy |

The trails are sort of open during these events.. Jeepers Jambo is the biggest issue.. You are kind of free to travel up to the Bridge then I believe you are allowed to pass thru only, not get out of your rig until the top of Cadillac
As for Sierra Trek again it is open but in both runs you will not be very liked and don't expect a warm reception or much help... Plenty of people do it during these events but .... It's a respect thing.... I suggest you find another weekend Your Choice but most prefer to leave these events alone as there are many weekends available not to interfere.... |

Thanks SAR Sammy. Yeah, I figured they would get in the way of a nice clean run with getting people down the trail that aren't used to it. I really hope to run Fordyce the weekend before the Sierra Trek 8/5-7 before the rock stacking and everything else goes on.

I was/am wondering the same thing. I have a tacoma with a solid axle conversion...and my wheelbase exceeds their 'requirements' for pre-inspection.(for sierra trek...) My roommate and I BOTH have capable rigs, but we do NOT fall within their "pre-inspection" requirements for wheelbase. I BELIEVE we are 125" and their 'cutoff' is 123"...whatever it is, we are off by 2 or 3 inches. I just don't understand WHY we cannot be included in this event... Whats to keep us from 'shadowing' the group?? |

Sierra Trek guidelines:
The short wheelbase runs are for short wheelbases..... that being said; these rules were made up alooooong time ago....... hence, also within guidelines is the 80" overall width rule. these were set inplace waaay before guys started putting fullwidth axles under their rigs. they still monditor the width issue, and if you're too wide, they cannot deny you running the trail. they usually make you run behind the last-leaving rig in line though. lots of time can be made-up in spots though, so don't fret being completely last....... I'v never seen anyone at tech with a tape measure for wheelbase. They use a funky guage for checking the overall width though..... gay. winch hill #3 is a tight-spot for wide axles.. heck, even a YJ with 10" rims is subject to getting "pinched" and causing a major fubar for the rest of the group behind him. there are also a couple spots where trees predict how wide you can be to pass thru. and I don't think too many people can climb two tires same side over a 5 foot diameter tree trunk. --Sherpa

I'm planning to run Fordyce the weekend before the Sierra Trek 8/5-7, starting the trail early Sat 8/6. Anyone is welcome, if you think your rig is build enough to do it.
Last time I ran Fordyce with a large group, it took 19 hours of full time wheeling with little to no breaks. The only thing that broke, were a few people in front of me that needed to be winched and straped through the trail. |

We are signed up for sierra trek too and have an 86" axles under the jeep and we are gonna try to see if they will let us go. Our jeep is more capable then 99% of jeeps on the run. The only thing I am worried about is if there are any trees that there are some trees that might be too close together to fit thru. But I know I have seen pics of H1s and stuff going thru so I don't see why 86 is too wide. We will see what they say sat morning. Look for a yellow CJ7 on 8" portals.

I talked with some of the peeps doing the inspection and they told me that the width limits are being overlooked this year due the popularlity of people putting full width axles under their rigs. They didn't get a chance to correct it in the advertisements for the event. Just what I've heard.

My crew is working Winch Hill 4 this year. According to the last meeting, they WILL be checking widths. I dont think they are as tight on WB, so you guys that were a few inches over on WB, you would probably been ok.
The WB and width rules were put in place LONG before we were all running 40" tires. Clearance has always been and always will be an issue on Fordyce. rules are there to keep the group moving. If one guy is constantly getting hung up and winched off, that REALLY draggs the group and makes for a long day. If your not signed up for ST, then please, by all means avoid the trail that weekend. This year, we have a bumper crop of rigs and it's going to be hard enough without having interlopers dispersed in the mix, trying to go against flow and otherwise disrupting the run.

If I'm not mistaken they will just make you run in the tail end of the group.... We are working with the committee to get the width rule changed for next year. Hell even a Rubicon with 10 wheels & 33's will be right around 80" Our club is working Winch Hill 3. Stop in for a beer & say hi. El Rolo

I've been to Sierra Trek a few times, to say the least. I have also been on a few of the different commities helping out over the years. The width issue is always a battle even within Cal 4-Wheel. The length was upgraded a few years ago because the then current president bought a new Toy and it was too long. The width issue seems to be old school vs. new school wheelers and not a problem with the trail itself. We were told one year that over 80" rigs weren't allowed because they would cause the dirt at the top of winch hill 3 to go into the rock/creek area below. It made no sense (rain does the same thing) but they said it during Cal 4-Wheel meeting, and no one asked any questions. Usually they will hang a couple pvc type pipes from the trees just before you get to tech. If you hit them you are too wide, if not you get to go. What we do now is just enter from the half way point at Fordyce Lake, we even camp there and just wheel in and out, day and night, just like you would camping at Loon Lake for a weekend at the Con. This gets you past tech, and past the boring 1st half of the trail.
