Custom Snorkel. 2nd Gen 4Runner. PICS

What you need, One Safari Snorkel Head, Two 45 Degree angle PVC Adapters, 1 90 Degree PVC Adapter, One 6ft length of pipe, Grinder, Sawsall, Welder, Steel, Caulking

Here is what I have put together so Far for my Custom Snorkel Installation
More pics to follow as they come

First off you need to buy the Safari Snorkel Head, You can buy JUST the head for $80 Canadian. (Pricey I Know But its what makes the snorkel look good. and not a TOTAL Ghetto hack job)

After you take off your Fender, you will notice there is already a hole in the Frame leading to the air box, all you need to do is enlarge it a bit to fit both a 2" PVC Pipe and the Wire loom.

Cut a hole in the air box and fit the Pipe into the box

Big Pic: http://www.mudrunner.ca/snorkel/snorkel1.jpg

Heres a Pic Of the Piece that goes into the air box

Big Pic: http://www.mudrunner.ca/snorkel/snorkel_b.jpg

Attached to the 90* Elbow

Big Pic: http://www.mudrunner.ca/snorkel/snorkel_a.jpg

In to Air Box

Next mock the pipe up where you would like it, You will need to cut the outter part of the fender and weld a plate in. for strength.

Big Pic: http://www.mudrunner.ca/snorkel/snorkel2.jpg

Heres the Cut.. sorry bad pic

Big Pic: http://www.mudrunner.ca/snorkel/snorkel3.jpg

Heres the mock up of how the pipe will Run. THIS IS THE MOCK UP. you need to bend the pipe in order to get the fender lining back on.

Big Pic: http://www.mudrunner.ca/snorkel/snorkel5.jpg

Here's the PVC Pipe all bent and the piece that goes into the airbox attached

Big Pic: http://www.mudrunner.ca/snorkel/snorkel_e.jpg

Here is How I bent the PVC Pipe. I heated up the plastic with a torch, (Just keep turning the pipe, and bend it over an old rim.

Big Pic: http://www.mudrunner.ca/snorkel/snorkel_d.jpg

Next Cut a Hole in the Fender. THIS PART IS SCARY,

Okay and here's the finished product.

I still need to bend the top a Tiny bit more. But Im fairly happy with it.

I Used a peice of interiour trim to cover the hole in the fender around the pipe

Hood protector (We see lots of forest driving in this neck of the woods) Lots of branches and tree's = lots of scratches and dents. The Hood guard will eventually tie into the rock rails, and sliders, when I get them done. I just finished the rear bumper. (New baby = not allot of time to play in the garage)

If they do it on a Hummer why not a Runner ?

I think that picture is of an H2. I don't think a real hummer (H1) would be equipped with something like that. They probably would have a brush guard of sorts, but I dunno about a "hood protector".

When I first saw it on your 4Hummer I thought it was a hunting rack, kinda like what they put on the front of ATVs.

*EDIT* If you have larger pictures of the snorkel install, please post them! It's really tough to make out what's happening in those little pictures.

Sound interesting for using the hood as a step to get to the roof... edit: higher up towards the windshield of course...

My buddy had one on his H1, it tied into the loops coming out of the hood, had to tilt the whole thing forward to get under the hood.

few questions:

doesn't the 2" pipe and all the 90*'s restrict air flow into the air box quite a bit?

is it realy needed considering the distributer is going to be under water about 2' before the inlet to the snorkle?

isn't your computer also going to be under water long before that?

Nice clean install, but I personally do not like the "sewer pipe" look and I feel that it is just asking to be knocked off by low hanging branches. That is why I built mine like this. If I am up to water this deep, I have more things to worry about then the engine!!!!!!!! Disreguard the K&N drop-in, I got rid of that POS a couple of years ago.

Sewer pipe rawks! 2" is too small though, need at least 3" or the engine will starve for air, that's the mistake I made.

As for the distributor getting wet, ...uh silicone.

Can't find any deeper pics, but I regulary drive through water over 5 feet deep. It's just part of wheelin in Ontario. Here's one where I'm already 4 feet deep & just starting the crossing.

now, how about the same depth but with a current strong enough to push you down stream. it's just part of wheeling in northern california

i think that it also serves as insurance against hydrolock, moving the ecu to the glove box is easy.

When you guys are doing these 5ft crossings, does water flood into the cab pretty bad? To the level of the outside water?

Just curious since I suppose the door weatherstrip might offer some sealing and it might take a while for water to flood in through all the firewall passthroughs. I just have no idea

Back when I had a full snorkle, I stuck my truck in water up to the bottom of the outdoor mirror glass - as in, you could see an inch of water above the bottom of the window.

It took about 5 minutes to roll down the back window, crawl through the back of the 4 runner and fling a towstrap back to a buddy on shore, and get pulled back. That whole time my passenger was holding it at ~2500 RPM. Under that much water a lot of engine power is required just to push the exhaust fumes all the way out the pipe.

In 5 minutes, there was water up to the bottom of the front seats - about 4 inches or so. But that was it. Opening the door & letting the lake out had my buddies on shore ROFL. I was very surprised how slow it leaked in.

But that was with a 4" IFS lift & 33s. Now I've got 8 2.5" holes in the floorboards for drainage when you're hosing mud out of the interior. I think it'd leak in a little faster.

I've posted the larger images in the first 2 post's as links

Truck doesn't seem to be starving for air. Run's allot better than with the K&N Cone filter. The Stock Intake silencer pipe is 2" ABS plastic so ??

I'm trying to come up with a way to use the front intake (behind the headlight) for everyday use, and than shut it closed somehow when Im gonna hit some water, and breath threw the snorkle. (Right now the stock intake has been siliconed shut. ANY IDEAS ?

The Hood guard is Phase 1 of that build. It will tie into the Rock rails and sliders when its complete, Kinda a mini Exo.

Got the Idea for the hood guard here: http://www.roadarmor.com/ra3/index.html and the Original H1 had one too.
Like I said that Hood Guard is PHASE ONE. it will be rebuilt when I make a new front bumper. (First is sliders, and a rear rock rail... I JUST finished the rear bumper)

not to highjack, but my dad had a 92 H1, and at the time he was wondering why they made such a thing. all we had ever heard was that they made them to protect the fiberglass hood.

Ah' see'um all the time, popular mod on H1's. Don't know how effective they are, but seen lots of them.

Yup, I get soaked, plus I don't have the luxury of a 5 min delay either. The water comes in right away. The water doesn't bother me, it's the bogs that stink up the truck for weeks.

Nice work on the snorkel other than you should of use bigger material.....

As for the hood rack / guard thingy..... Thats ! The forest around her would eat that thing alive! Heck I've gotten dents from small branches getting in between my sliders / wheel hoops and my sheetmetal on my 4runner. and on my previous vehicle I would get stuff caught inbetwwen my roof rack and the top of the cab. That thing you got on there would just cause branches to get pinned in between the hood and that small tubing. Then all hell is going to break loose when you keep driving as the branch denting the hood and bending those little tubes. I've even seen one roof rack ripped right off a set of yakima rain gutter mounts totally trashing the rain cuts and the top of the cab.

With nothing but smooth sheetmetal, braches and shrubery can slide right over it without causing damage other than some some brush pin stripping.

But I guess everyone got to learn on there own.....
