7.62x39 (AK47) 6x or 8x scope
gonna pick up one of the russian military 42mm scopes
illuminated reticle, rangefinder, german lens, gas filled, multi coated ,blingity bling This will be a "multi use" weapon. emergency animal slayer, plinker, pest dispatcher, human stopper. from your experience would you run a 6x or and 8x scope with a 7.62x39 thanks and any input and poking fun is fair game

I'd go with something more like a 2X or maybe 4X tops. An AK is not a sniper rifle.
Ive thought about something more on the lines of a cheep red dot (1X...aka no magnifaction) scope. I like the mount that goes where the gas rod is (in front of the action) but they are $$$.

When you coming down to the shop in Leesburg Gil? No surplus russian stuff to look at, but plenty of toys to keep you busy for hours. Hook you up with a discount too

as for the gas tube mount: they are good (the UNIMaK ones) but will still move the zero but no where near as much as the cheap dust cover ones I have seen the ones that replace the normal steel rear sight with a weaver rail and those are nice also. Quote:

I would think a 1x or very little magnefication would serve the purpose better. The only reason you would need a high magnification scope would be hunting or varmint shooting, and I really can't see shooting a serious shot outside 100-125 yards with a 7.62x39.
They (the ak/sks) look really good with scopes on them though.

Wouldn't putting an 8x scope on an AK be akin to putting a blower on a Yugo?

the full size AK is as accurate as the shooter I dont plan on doing 500-1000m dime sized shooting with this bitch .Like i said the weapon will be a well rounded tool. emergency food hunter, people hitter, and general fun. The problem is i cant get a 4x in that big of an objective so that leaves the 6x. a red dot zero magnification covers the entire center of the target at 200 yards and i would like something thats not so much of a guesstamate of where i am hitting. Hey the iron sites on a AK go to 800m anyway

yeah but that doesn't mean it's effective up to that range my 4x posp has been more than enough for 100 yards.... haven't tried it at 200... hmm One cool thing about those scopes, they've got additional chevrons for 100 and I believe 200 also, so you don't have to make any adjustments when going from 50 yards to 100 or whatever...

Know what you mean. ![]() But I have seen some AKs that are lucky to hold a 10" group at 100 yards. Now my 74's nothing compareed to a VEPR, but it'll hold it's own

I gotta tell you Doc, the 6x42mm would be my choice... if I had to choose. Max effective range for an AKM-47 is all of about 4-500 yds. IMO, pending on the target and the shooter. I don't put scopes on my ak's, not that it may not be worth it. Just that theres a place for optics and a place not for em'. Those scopes should be mounted on a dragunov or something along those lines, fpk's and such. Now a red dot!!! That would be the ticket for an ak
Quick aquisition, lightweight and etc..

I would go with a four, or a six if you must. Overmagnification will hold you back if you need to find your target fast. If the place you are ordering from is out of stock, do not order!!! After 9-11 Kalinka had trouble getting their scopes into the US for a while, a lot of people had to wait for quite a while.
Tantal is a great place to buy Russian military optics and mounts. Centerfire systems usually has some in stock as well. These scopes are very fun and unique, my good friend who is a hunting guide did not like them due to the reticle. They are made for AKs and the look good and work well on them. This reminds me I need to sight in my .308 for bear season tommorow.

doc what did you end up going with? Also, how are those side rails mounted to the AK?

Both of my AKs have the side rails welded on, and both have 4x scopes that doc posted. Both came from centerfiresystems.com. To attach the rails, there's a couple options. It will depend on your type of mount as to which is the best method to mount. If you get one that is already tapped, just drill holes and screw it on. The screws will go on the inside of the receiver. I think Tantal has these on their website. If you get the ones like I've got, you can screw, rivet, or weld them on. Ideally, they'd be riveted on, and the riviting is not difficult if you know what you're doing. For me, for the sake of being easy and quick, I welded mine on and they work just fine. Both of mine came from K-var and came with rivets that I didn't use. ![]()
