To CHOKE or not to CHOKE?
I have a dilema... My buddy finaly just got a place were we can practice MMA(mixed martial arts) Ultimate fighting to those who aren't familiar with the politicly correct word of MMA.
My buddy is the coach he, has about 12 years experience and I have 10. We just got in this place and people are finaly coming to practice. My buddy is passionate about the sport and coaching. I don't realy care about coaching; I love to work with people and help them, but I do not want to be the "COACH"! So after we rolled live for awhile he came up and wanted to try and demonstrate what some people were doing wrong. SO I get in his half guard(On top of him with one leg between his) and he says go! So all I did was defend and just kind of went through the motions. He opened himself up twice to 2 differant chokes. I locked the chock on and just held. I never finished him 1. The choke was sunk 2. The choke was past the point of no escape...3. I let both chokes go! (Keep in mind everyone is watching) I just couldn't finish, beacause I did not want to make him look bad in front of all the new people( Now if we're alone I will choke him). He is just trying so hard to recruit new people and get a good following so we can go out and rent our own place He is my good friend... If it had been some other person I would have finished them. I feel I made the right call, but HOW LONG SHOULD I DO THIS? What do you think? KEVIN (I HAVE NOTHING TO PROVE BY CHOKING OUT OUR COACH)

I would think that as a martial arts expert with 10 years experience, YOU would be the one to answer that question.

Then again, you said "he came up and wanted to try and demonstrate what some people were doing wrong".. maybe you should have showed him what he was doing wrong ![]() I'd love to try it someday, but I find that when I get whacked in the nose, it hurts and my eyes get all watery n' shit. I'll just stick to criticizing the professionals on PPV's

i'm assuming you guys never talk to each other besides when you have people around. ask him. i would want to pull in business but at what cost. the first time someone walks in knowing what's up they'll see you pussed out and wonder if you guys are for real or they'll understand the idea of sparring. so you're screwed either way

Then to Redwood City with Eugene Jacksone and Tim Lajcik and some other low key places. My buddy was trained by his cousin who had a MMA record of I think 15-2, his cousin trained under Gokar(If you don't know of him, get into MMA a little more and you will)- My buddy is by far the most technical grappler I have worked with! I guess I didn't feel it was nessacery to choke him... He was trying to demonstrate- But it was live though, so I kinda let him, with me just playing the defensive roll. Now if we roll live for x amount of rounds- then it's on like Donkey Kong! KEVIN

Cool thanks for clarifying. I currently train at Ralf Gracie's in Mountain View under Batata Sandro. Kinda curious what you'd say your skill level would be in a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ranking...purple, brown?
Good luck with your school!
