High pinion 3rd parts help

Working on my X-Mas list ... I am trying to figure out if it will be cheaper to purchase complete from Marlin or Inchworm for $1,595 complete with ARB. Been looking for used but have had no luck so far...

Here is the list of parts that I would need if i built myself, am i missing anything? I searched but could not find any diagrams or list of parts I would need. I have a friend who can set it up so labor will be free.

High Pinion Empty (New) Front Housing $285
High Pinion Oil Slinger $13.18
High Pinion Oil Retainer $3.32
V6/High Pinion Adjusting Wheel $12.06
V6/High Pinion Lock Tab $1.43
Pinion Seal $6.26
V6 & High Pinion Setup Kit, $149
High Pinion 5.29 R&P Gear Set, $225
ARB Locker RD-23 $749

Total parts: 1445.25

I also saw this:

Quote:
the v6/4 banger flanges have different width flanges (depth into the carrier). so that might be an issue with the fj80 third????
Can anyone confirm this, will my existing flange work off of my 4cyl 3rd?

Thanks,
Brian

why would you spend $1445 dollars when you could buy one built for that, if not 50 dollars more. I bought mine built from inchworm and its been great.

yeah, you did not include installation costs. Unless you want to do the gears yourself. Plus, I am pretty sure that marlin crawler doesn't have any 5.29 high pinion gears right now. Only inchworm does.

Because whereever he's pricing, they're too high. It's amazing how many people don't call those wonderful people in the Vendor's forums when they need stuff. Try getting prices from PORC, CCOR, RockBuggySupply, etc.

I know for a fact that an RD-23 ARB isn't $749. I have one sitting in my shop right now I paid under $700 for, although the prices did just go up 2% after that.

If you can find a high-pinion third, you can do it cheaper. You'd just need a master kit, a 5.29 R&P (NOT 4WP GENUINE CRAP!) and a master install kit.

If you can't find a high-pinion third locally or using something like car-part.com, you're better of buying from Marlin.

Because that is list price, I will get most of the parts at cost. So really looking at around 1200ish, but I really do not want to bug my friend with a parts list and cost at this point. Mostly interested in everything I would need to get. Also I would not have to pay shipping so that saves money also. Figure with shipping I would save $200 or so buying the parts separately at list price. Inchworm & Marlin are both $1595+ shipping...

Glad to see you're not paying those prices.

You want a laugh? Price an RD-23 from 4wheelparts. Hint: It's over $1K.

Yeah i am a very prudent buyer... Been watching for a while now but not seen any good deals on used stuff... Just looked to see what i paid for my rear ARB and gears...
644.55 - ARB
97.91 - Master kit
132.00 - Gear set

$874 + tax installed

Front will be more cause i am gonna need this stuff and not sure if he will be able to get it any cheaper. All the used ones i have seen so far around 300ish so for that much would rather just go new. I can also get toyota parts at cost so will price this stuff out with another friend of mine.

High Pinion Empty (New) Front Housing
High Pinion Oil Slinger
High Pinion Oil Retainer
V6/High Pinion Adjusting Wheel
V6/High Pinion Lock Tab
Pinion Seal

Routinely I see built Toy diffs in the classifieds with ARBs, both on Marlin BBS, Pirate and even local boards.

I just bought a new ARB RD01 complete for under 500 from a guy.

Why spend $$ on a ARB???? I bought my high pinion fj80 elocker brand new from Toyota for around $750. Regeared it for whatever gears cost (bought mine from a buddy for like $100). Done. Control box? Use a couple of headlight relays and a toggle switch.

The flange on the high pinion fj80 elocker is different than the V6 thirds. The pinion is larger in the spline area. When I regeared using gears made for the high pinion land cruiser third, the flange did not fit that pinion which was the same size as the v6 pinion. So this leads me to believe the the elocker high pinion diff has a different flange then the open high pinion diff and that the open high pinion diff and the v6 diffs ahve the same flange. (Whew!)

Not sure about the size of 4 cyl flange.

I considered the elocker but I had heard that on the elocker the wheels have to spin a couple rotations before it locked up vs the ARB which locks as soon as the button is pushed. Someone please correct me if i am wrong but wouldn't this mean that using an elocker after u are stuck does no good? Yes you could always lock before you get stuck but then might as well just get a Detroit. My last trip I only used the rear ARB a couple of times and each was after i could not go any further, as soon as i hit the button i would start moving again then turn it off.

Why would you even consider paying that much for a 3rd mem. I found mine at www.car-part.com for $225. I should have got the elocker though, I think there where a few in the $450 range but I was trying to save as much as I could. So I just bought a lockright.

I have been running a rear e-locker for years. I just got my front one in and have only taken it on one trip, but it worked the same. They lock up right away when you need them to. While it is true that you usually have to have one wheel turn at a different rate than the other to lock, this is not a problem because if you need it, this will be happening anyway!

Think about it, when do you need a locker? When one wheel doesn't have traction and all the power goes to it. It spins and the other wheel doesn't. The locker will lock up instantly at that point. I have never had my locker not lock when I needed it to. Sometimes I don't even bother stopping. I'll be going along and if I feel that I am starting get tire spin, I'll hit the button and just keep on going. I unlock it once I get through without stopping. Some people leave them locked all the time, but I like having open diffs for improved turning radius and to reduce crab-walking. Depends on the trail.

Sometimes they take a little while to unlock, but that is usually not a problem. Usually it is only a few feet and if you turn a bit they usually unlock right away.

BTW, the list price from Toyota is around $1000, but lots of dealers will discount 25% for the 4-wheeling community. You just have to ask. Try Jay Marks Toyota in Texas or Penn Toyota in New York.

I have a write up on my website: http://carterswebsite.com/4runner/mods/locker/

Thanks carter but I am looking for high pinion, I assume you just have a regular v6 elocker. I am looking for fj80 high pinion.

I looked on car-part.com and the cheapest i found was 250 and still have to change gears and get master install kit... so at most will save $30-40. Still waiting for my quote on new from a friend but found new housing for $270 at toyotapartscheap.com. Think I should be able to get new for 250 with no shipping from a friend.

Let me say this, look at some of the smaller shops. A year and half ago I got a Hi-Pinion diff., it had new Toyota 4:88 gears all new bearings, new ARB. I paid $1,300.00 out the door. I cannot tell you where I got it because I promised the owner that I would not tell. I told him what someone else was going to build me one for and he matched it. I did not lie to him, told him the truth. So start asking around, you may get a deal.

Thanks OOP's, I have a friend who has a mechanic shop who did my rear ARB V6 + gears, and my dad has a body shop so can get yota parts at cost. Both here in town, an employee was suppose to be getting me a price on a new housing but of course he has not called me back... I guess i should cut him some slack since its friday eve... I paid about $874 for my V6 3rd gears and ARB installed. So depending on the housing thinking its only gonna be around 1100 - 1200.

I guess really all i am interested in is, do i need any other additional parts other than what i listed above? I just don't want any surprises, since its a freebie job I want to keep his time minimal. I think i confused everyone listing prices, this thread is only about the parts i will need and any tips. If I found out I needed a bunch more little parts other then i listed then I would steer more towards used or Marlin/Inchworm etc.

I am pretty sure that they do not have them. there was a post somewhat recently talking about this and one of the guys from marlin said they don't have them. Then the guy from inchworm replied saying that they do have the high pinion 5.29 gears. Not the 3rd member or the locker, just the gears. Just thought you should know. Maybe try calling.
