Ughhh.... I need engagement ring advice...

Man, is this like some sort of ultimate test that women make men go through to see if the guy is worthy of marriage? I've been looking online, and remembering the small "hints" she has dropped this year, but i'm still all confused.

I know her ring size already, so that's one down, but she mentioned wanting a square cut. I've looked, and i can't find one called a square cut. Princess cut is square, but it's obviously called princess.

And she wants white gold for the band, but i never realized how many different ways they could bend metal into a ring to hold some outrageously priced mineral made of carbon...

Any help?
A bullet to my head maybe? I'm sure there will be a lineup for this one.

Is she a fru fru girl? Or a sparkly kind of girl?? There are a million ways to make an engagement ring...I like simple. Plain, medium width band with a single diamond is my style. Some girls like all the diamonds in the band as well. What is her style....figure that out--then move forward.

EDIT: damn Rose...you're quick!

Thanks SCEEP AND ONLY SCEEP!!!
Mo, you can go live in BC with the whiz master and eat champagne coloured snow.

I was thinking about getting a one carat, they look to run right around 4 grand, that was a bit surprising.

Princess cut
Colorless
White gold band

sounds simple to me

My wifes is a marquee center with marquee bagettes set in platinum.

Stay away from "colored" diamonds. It is a trend. Colorless is timeless.

edit: check out www.adiamondisforever.com. they have a cool ring designer thing.

What's the point of buying the ring now? What happened to the days of going and buying a ring then presenting it with a "Will You Marry Me?"

I'll tell you this much, if you buy her a ring and she complains about it, run as fast as you can, cause she don't want you, she just wants what you can buy her.

Colorless is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Oh, and I recommend buying the stone separately from the setting---get a good look at it. And if she is not a big girl...3/4 of a carat is still a very nice size. Diamonds are expensive. Mine was bought wholesale for about $5,000 for 1.1 carats.....so.....good luck and congrats. She should be happy with whatever you get her if it comes from the heart.

You're all fru fru girls when it comes down to it.
Nah, she's more into plain, not a band full of 1/4 carat diamonds.

I sort of liked this one, and think she would too:

I've been seeing that there are various grades of colourless, and slightly coloured. D is the highest (most $$$) but the D, E, F ones are considered colourless.
There are no A B C for whatever reason. Women must have made up the scale.

And she's a good kid, otherwise i sure as hell wouldn't be ring shopping.

I,J & K is what you will find in the mall department stores. G & H are nice colors and not quite teh $$ D, E and even F are. Then you have to look at flaws....there are carbon specs, inclusions that look like gashes, some look like bubbles....buying a diamond is a tricky business.

That diamond website is a good educator. You are making a huge investment here and your manly pride is on the line. You get too small or an obviously poor quality rock, and you will be laughed at in every women's room for miles. Not to mention the lack of respect at home.

Remember:

1. Two months of salary...before taxes...don't be cheap. Anything more is just showing off. (Yes, it is nice and all, but a modern woman has her pride too and we can afford our own righthand ring these days...which will ostentatious as all hell.)

2. Chant this: Cut, Clarity, Color, Carat. The four C's of diamonds.

3. Get a certified diamond (more $$$$$) and get it insured.

The rule of engagment rings:

If she breaks up with you, you get the ring.

If you break up with her, she gets the ring.

This does not expire after the wedding.

Got my old lady a tension setting. Not really a traditional engagement ring, but it is something different that you won't see everyday, and she gets a lot of compliments on it. Hers is yellow gold, and round diamond, but they make different styles for princess as well.

look around lots. Rita's rock had a feather in it, so it graded lower, but when I had it set, its covered by the prong. I figured who cares if no one will ever see it, it was plenty big (a bit too big now, she says ), and exactly what she (I) wanted.

It appraised much better

$11,500!!!

shop around. buy your rock un-mounted, and take the time to research what you are looking for in colors/flaws before you go to the store. when you get a loupe in your eye check em out good. looking at rocks is pretty damn cool once you know what you are lookin at, and what you are looking for.

in the end my wife got a nice vs1-g Marquise cut, that after MANY hours of shopping and pissing off salesman i got for a damn good price.... at the first store i went to ironically.
