Paint: Flat, Glossy, Satin???

My brother is about to paint his chasis black. He likes the look of flat black but not how it seems to absorb mud. Gloss seems to be too shiny and he has read that the cheaper paints he will use will get a wierd sheen over time.

So then he was thinking satin or something in between but cant find any of the readily available paints in a mid gloss or satin finish.

I used rustoleum bare metal primer and gloss paint sprayed through a cheap gun and thinned with acetone. He is worried that with gloss black that same set up will look to 'bling-bling' for the tough, simple look he is going for.

The Hammerite Rust Cap Hammered finish says it is a "glossy paint" but looks to be nicly dull from the pictures we have seen. Any pictures or experience applying that stuff with a gun? I know it is a spray can favorite.

Is there any other mid glossy finish paints that are readily available and easy to apply? Somewhere in between a flat and a glossy so that it does not absorb mud but it does not look all bling bling.

John Deere Blitz Black looks good. More of a Satin black i think. Its not quite as flat as the 'Krylon Flat Black' used in the Camo System. Used it on my Toyota. Dunno about absorbing mud but the shit washes right off for me. Dont foget cheap; I shopped around and found it for $18 a gallon but ive seen it as high as $35. Also comes in aerosol cans.

rustoleum satin black, or rustoleum hammered finish, real hammerite is great, but a bitch to work with, you have to spray a whole can all at once, and the caps get plugged all the time, and the cans get plugged also, if you can deal with this, its a great finish

I used VHT's satin black chassis paint in the spray can. If it's a tube buggy then I would use a spray gun and a booth if possible. Big problem with overspray on mine. I know your not building a show truck, but niether am I. If your going to paint it then you might as well make it look good. The gloss is way easy to keep clean and looking good. Maybe go with a flat black paint and shoot some clear over it.

Let me know what you end up using.

spray your frame with PAM before you go wheeling, you hose the mud right off, and the paint wont absorb and of the mud's color.

John Deere Blitz black is flat, it's the big rage with the Rat Rod guys. For your chassis I vote semi black.

A buddy of mine and I repainted his trailer with a cheap two part paint from the auto paint store... required the paint, plus a reducer. Sprayed it through a cheap gun... the second quart we mixed came out with a different sheen than the first which really pissed us off, but we discovered that we could vary the reducer and get just the right look we wanted....

both the paint and reducer were under $30, and we still have over 1/2 the product left, which should be more than enough to paint the top half of my suburban...

I just painted my front axle with Hammerite and I am getting ready to do the rear. I am impressed with the finish, and yes, the paint was a PIA to work with. The nozzles plugged up several times on the spray can. I had to rob one from another can to finish the job, and repeatedly had to place the spray nozzle on a can of brake cleaner to loosen the jammed up opening.

Click on my link and you can see how it turned out.
