Those who said the "christmas light video" was edited

I just recieved this from a co-working in OH.

"I was just out cruising around at lunch and they had Paul O’Neil from TSO on the radio and they were talking about the guy with the Christmas lights synced to Wizards of Winter. The guy bought an FM transmitter (1 watt or something) and you can pull up to his house and tune your radio to 95.7 and watch the show while you are jamming on the radio. He started out with 16,000 lights and added 10,000 more, he spent all summer getting it set up through his computer. It started as a block contest to see who could have the best display for Christmas, obviously he won. But O’Neil said he received hundreds of emails with the link, went on the net and saw the show and was quite impressed. They contacted the guy and he thought they were going to shut him down but they offered to buy more lights for the guy and stuff."

Every year I say I'm going to get up really early the day after x-mas, and go buy every string of lights I can find at 75% off. I always get to the parking lot of the stores, see the lines, and go back home.

I was going to post more in that thread but had decided it was a dead topic anyway. But since it was brought back up... It would take a LONG time to edit that piece. Towards the end when the lights are going on and off at different speeds, you would have to keep track of each, know when they should be fading in and out, and when they over lap with other lights. You'd almost have to have multiple layers for each light, and keeping track of each layer and it's timing would be reallllllly tedious. Infact it'd probably be easier to build the kit that makes the lights do it from scratch than it would be to edit a video like that. The only other way to make a video like that would be to manually creat each light on the computer and control them that way. But this idea that y'all had that the guy just turned on different lights and shot 10 seconds, then turned other lights on and shot 10 seconds, only to edit it together later is crazy.

Of course now that everyone has disproved the theory my little rant is pointless, but it still makes me feel smarter than all you other "editing experts" out there

Last year my Target still had some lights in January and I bought some. They were only .17 cents a box. I think I ended up buying 100 boxes of them, but now we wish I would have bought more. Robert vows he is going to get more lights this year after Xmas

I knew it wasn't edited because my local news franchises carried the actual video of what's happening.

I also, apparently, correctly assumed that he used a small FM transmitter to transmit the synched music. That dawned on me when I first saw it, it was obvious.

In any case, the video on my news stations made it obvious that it was not a hasty video edit job, as could be concluded from teh less-than-stellar video quality available as downloads on the 'net.

Not that the news is a good source of facts, but we're talking about video here.

There was not one thing unbelievable about the display or the video, except the unbelievable effort and creativity someone put into the show.

Thanks Hal...

Video editing something like this would be INFUCKINGSANE...

Only people who have edited large amounts of footage and even tryed to overlay a seperate track would know this though...

Hal gets the cookie for the day!!

Sometimes your huge, crazy, dancing holiday light display can be a little too popular.

Cops asked a Deerfield Township, Ohio, man who covered his house with 25,000 Christmas lights rigged to dance when holiday music plays to pull the plug on the display after a car wreck Tuesday night, according to Cox News Service.

Carson Williams, the owner of the house, told police he would turn off his holiday decorations indefinitely.

As earlier reported in Out There, Williams spends nearly two months hooking up the 25,000 lights and programming them to dance — hundreds of cars drive by his house north of Cincinnati every night to see the display, which also is posted online.

Sheriff's deputies couldn't reach the scene of the accident because of the cars lined up on his neighborhood streets, Williams told a local Cincinnati TV station.

"He told us if we start having traffic problems that he would shut the display down for a while," Warren County sheriff's Lt. Ed Petrey told Cox News Service.

Williams' holiday light show drew national media coverage because the 25,000 lights are synched by computer with music beamed to car radios.

"I do a frosty song, 'God Bless the USA,' and then 'Wizards of Winter,'" as the three songs in the 12-minute show, Williams told Cincinnati's Local 12 News.

Around 7:30 p.m. near Williams' dancing-light display, two cars collided but there were no injuries.

"I told the neighbors, I told the sheriff, if they get any complaints, I'll shut it down, because the neighbors are more important to me than the Christmas lights," Williams said on NBC's "Today" show on Monday.

For now, Williams' eccentric light show will only be viewable on the Internet, motorists have been lining up between 6 and 10 p.m. since the display kicked off the week of Thanksgiving.

Williams, an electrical engineer, says he spent about $10,000 on his dancing Christmas lights.
