79CJ-5 with a 94 FI 4.0 Tanny/X-fer Case ??
HI looking for a few ideas.
Its curently running a t-150 and a d-20 x-fer case. I wanted to go to a Automatic but of course I can't find one that will fit without a nub of a driveshaft. I plan on keep the stock axles. Also the jeep is running a 3 inch suspension lift 1"BL and 33's curently. Just wondering if you have any ideas for a tranny and x-fer case swap that might fit without an awsome amount of work to get them to fit. Thanks for anyhelp in advance. J

anyone have a measurement on an "AW4" with a dana300 twin stick looking like a idea that might pan out so I can keep the passenger side droop.

I don't know about the auto in the CJ5. I'm sure its been done. If you want to go 4 speed, a Ford T-18 will bolt right up to your T-150 bellhousing. Then just get an adapter for the T/C. I would definately find a D300 and lose the 20. Good luck!

I just measured my AW4 it is 26 1/4 long the d300 is 11 1/2 to center of ujoint and I am using a 7/8 thick ring to make up for the longer input bearing. I know you can save a small amount by using a sealed front bearing and milling down the bearing retainer for a shorter ring( maybe no ring at all never tried) hope this helps.

If you go with a AX15 5 speed out of a YJ, TJ, XJ; a NP dodge transfer out if an 80's dodge should bolt right up. We checked the factory adapter from the dodge, and a 242 bolted right up to it. You will need to find out the spline counts and shaft size to make sure, but that will allow you to keep the passenger side drop on the rear and you can run the factory bell that has the crank trigger in it on the 4.0 and save on aftermarket crank trigger.

Pretty sure the spline is 23 on the ax15.Could also use an nv3500/3550 I would use a dana 300 before an np tcase. They should bolt up with a clocking ring.

Jason,
I was going to run a 904 and a D300 in that Jeep before I sold it. That way you will not have to worry about tranny pan clearance. I think you would be happy with that setup. It will shorten up your rear driveshaft though. Keep me informed with what you do with it. Good Luck

Your biggest problem is space or room lengthwise for whatever it is you decide to go with. The AX 15 is way too long . I think your best bet considering space and a favorable crawl ratio is the T 18 and the D 300.

Well I think we all know the problem is the legnth. And Im sure we all know that a T18 or NP435 would be a good trans with the dana 300.It sounds like he wants an auto and 1 with overdrive.Maybe alittle more info on what you want to end up with will help.
The ax15 is only 16" long according to novak and the t18 is 11" so its not that long.If your looking for overdrive Ide say either the ax15 or nv3500/3550 if you want the granny low/overdrive go with the nv4500. |

Turbo 350 to a Dana 20 or 300 is the most common auto swapped into a 5, if you want overdrive do it to a big hole Dana 18 and put a warn overdrive on it. Reguardless of what auto you run your shaft will be short. With the 350/18 combo you might have to swap in a quadratrac AMC 20 from a CJ7 or a late 60's D44 out of a 5 as they're both offset. The late 60's D44 would be your best bet as it's stronger after ditching the low spline shafts and going to something like a Warn FF kit, you'll probably have to re-gear it as they're pretty low, 4.10 to 4.56 is common. Just a note, if you go with one of the other T-Cases (20 or 300) you can do a 4:1 low kit, and run 3.73's in your axles as they'll drop your RPM's and give you a good cruising speed.

If he goes with an AMC tranny he will not need an adaptor. The Jeep has a good FI 4.0 in it now.

Here's what Advance Adapters' Buyers Guide shows:
T-150 = 9.25" T-18 = 11.875" AX 15 = 24.000" TH -350 = 21.5" Get out your tape measure. Have fun. |

Ouch, I might as well stick with the 150. Or I'll have to use 1" bolts as my driveshaft.lol
I'll keep everyone posted on this. thanks for all the help
