Rubicon at the begining of April...

I'm planing a trip to La at the begining of April. Can someone tell me if the Rubicon will be open, or will there be to much snow cover to do it???

Thanks for any and all help.

Tom

Nope, no one can tell you.

Seriously, I've run it at New Years, and I've seen it closed in May. Look at this link from last year:http://http://www.johnarenz.com/Rubicon.html

If you want to be sure you will be able to enjoy your trip, you are pretty safe between June and September.

Rubicon does not 'close' per se. It crosses the Sierra divide, tho, so it has VERY deep snow in most every April. Experienced drivers 'wheel large, wide tires through the winter, but the Sierra mountains are not forgiving of inexperience or insufficient gear.

IMHO, if you are not experienced in 'wheeling the high country in winter, or have 'wheeling buddies who are, you should choose a different trail.

Good point, Randii, I shouldn't have used the word, "closed".

The hammers where the other option. Done some of them last time, but love it out there.

Thanks for the heads up

Rubicon: when to run

If you have a choice as to when to run the Rubicon, choose a time when you make dust (rather than mud) these days. June to October.
We have a lot of eyes on our trail and a lot of work to do this summer to fix up a few areas in need of erosion control and trail repairs. So it just makes it easier if we don't have a lot of spring time use of the trail.
More on the trail and best times to run here: http://www.delalbright.com/Rubicon/rubicon.htm
