Schools after HS

hey everyone i am just starting my research on different schools for once i graduate from HS. To say the least, pretty much whatever i am going to do will relate to cars in one way or another. Just to recap on my abilities real quick like i am pretty much a 4 point student with physics and math and such (well finals sucked balls so we'll see on that 4 pt ). For my senior year im doing a program called running start and so i will be earning a years worth of college credit while being in HS still. So here was my initial plan
Go to a school such as wyotech or UTI (more than likely wyotech) for a year about. Then get into a 4 year school with 1 years credit done and join in as a sophomore. For the 4 year, i want something engineering related such as designing cars or anything of the like. One idea was the Vehicle Research Institute at Wester Washington U.
So here are my questions to you.
1. Which, if any, tech schools such as wyotech would you recommend. BTW i also know that you get what you put in and i would put as much as possible in.
2. What programs past the tech schools do you find particularly interesting that relate to what i am looking into? I would like to stay in state if possible to eliminate extra tuition costs however exceptions can be made.

My reasoning for going to a school like wyotech then going to a 4 year school is that after i graduate from the tech school i could have a solid part time job with *decent* income to fund the 4 year/make up for the tech school.

Now dont worry i am not leaving it up to the PBB public to determine my future, i just want to get some more insight and different point of views before any real work is put into getting where i want to be.

thanks for your suggestions
charlie

Working on cars sucks. I don't know how people do it for 30 or more years.

Well, maybe its not the cars. It's the people you have to put up with. In general, people suck.

thats why i want to go beyond working on cars with the 4 year. The tech would just be a backup type thing so i will pretty much have a job if i need it. If that actually makes sense

Ok I am not positive about this, but when I lived in WY, I recall that that school had good programs for diesel mechanics and heavy equipment repair. So if it were me I'd look into that as a fallback instead of simply turning wrenches on cars.

If you stay determined, I don't see any reason at all you should have a 'fall back'. Just get your degree.

yes they do have a sweet diesel program from what ive read. I also know that diesel is getting more and more popular. Idealy, the diesel thing would be the way to go however there are certain things about the auto program that entice me. What you get is the auto tech program then another set of training. I would choose the high performance engine building and custom chassic fab. I would learn to make full tube chassis and suspensions, along with welding skills etc. This would allow me to do things like rock crawlers etc, which is kind of a dream of mine, or just custom 4x4 type things.
and you are right, rusted, i shouldnt need a fallback, but it would be nice to have the training and the security.

My $0.02 -

Since you said you have a good GPA taking Physics and Math classes I would say go into a mechanical engineering school right off. Become a part of a FSAE team if you want to be in the auto industry or part of a mini baja team if you want to be in the auto industry on the off-road side. I know of several ME grads with FSAE experience getting jobs at Stainless Brakes, Garett (turbos), Banks Power, and high performance engine related jobs as well as the big 3 auto makers. Western Washington has a good FSAE program, I have a friend taking ME grad courses there. I also know Lawrence Tech in Michigan has a good FSAE program as well as an automotive engineering program. They have a 4 wheel dyno and work closely with Ford since it is nearby. There is another school around the OH-MI region that has another great school that has a focus on automotive engineering but I cant remember the name.

Ive heard this a lot and I had been considering goin to UTI or Wyo when I get out of HS but Im now leaning more towards looking at a dealership sponsored program of intro-job at the dealership alternated with courses at a CC. Does that sound like a good idea? I really cant imagine myself going to a 4 year college and being a zombie in all the shitthat doesnt interest me in the least.

ChryCo has a CAP program. True you don't have to pay for the training... But you do have to work there for some period of time (post-training) to "earn" the training dollars they spent on you.

Ditto what Brian1 said. If you're grades are as good as they say you are, you can get a decent scholarship(s). You need to be researching good engineering schools and get your degree. Look at the auto manufacturers' websites. They hire engineering students for summer internships. Then you can go to work for them initially and get some experience. If you like race cars or off road cars, you should be able to transition from there??

You need to do some research and start making some phone calls. Call the design departments a the auto manufacturers and talk with one of the senior designers/managers and ask them what they look for and recruit from. Do some networking in the industry (race teams) and find out what they look for. Don't sell yourself short. Being a mechanic is noble but I think you'd be underutilizing your skills and brains.

Try these:

Fuck You
Just because I commited a typo doesn't mean a fawker like you can make the above comment.

I could accuse you of supporting illegal immigration since some of these Mexicans in question aren't even legal.

They have flooded the field which has weakened demand and lessened pay.
