Buddies purpose built trailer
With all this talk of building trailers, I figured Id put up a pic of my biddies scrap iron trailer.
He built it from steel that was laying around, and go the axles for free. The frame is 8" channel, from a old semi. cross supports are 3x3 angle Tongue is a house trailer unit (stamped rating is 10k/25K assuming 25K is short duration?) axles are 3500lb, 4" drop units, from a camper, brakes on one(getting another brake axle for it) total investment was $300, for welding rod, lights, one bearing, one brake magnet, and 4 matching used tires. Kinda tough to tell from the pic, but its a open center, and the axles are mounted to a subframe, so they are movable. Orriginaly, it sat 4" lower, but had tire clearance issues after he put proper sized tires on it. It was built for hauling a bronco(in pic), but also fits XJ's perfectly, CJ's and YJ's, you end up putting the rear tires on top the fenders, but it works. We also squeezed a long box pickup on it once, but it was very, very tight.. He pulls it with a bronco(first trip was a 550 mile trip up for college), and is rock solid stable, and pulls straight as an arrow. Empty trailer weight is 1660lbs. Time to build was just under a week. heres two pics of it behind my old F-250, pulling his bronco wheeling rig.
