Square Tube vs. Round???

Ok, i have herd mixed things about bolth, hoping someone on here can give me an actual answer. is square or round tubing stronger(from resisting a bend). eg. if you put a piece of .120 wall 1" round tube in a press, would it bend easier or harder than a piece of .120 wall 1" square tube?

reason i ask, is i want to make an anti wrap bar and some folks say go square and some go round, and they each claim there way is less likely to bend(i know i wouldnt bend either but it really got me thinking which is stronger)

please! someone! help me, i need to put this one to rest.

The square tube is stronger as it has more material farther from the centoid.

You want Grade 12 tubing. Square or round. Possibly solid, though if it's solid, you could make a grade 12 wooden driveshaft that would work for backup.

I'd say square, but you have to have the folded sides facing the area that needs to be strong.

For example, If you were trying to bend a tube sidways, it would be really hard to break it if it were set up like this <> than a round tube like this o

the 1" square tube would better resist bending than the 1" round tube. the square tube would also be heavier. if you used a square tube with the same weight as the 1" round tube (just a wild guess, around 3/4" square) the round would be stronger.

just my opinion here, but the reason square is thought to be stronger is that is has sides that are straight up (vertical), when hit from underneath with a rock, will keep the flat (horizontal) sides from bending. on the other hand, round tube distributes the blow around the circumference, which could, actually, make IT stronger. check the tech tables and metal fab info here on PBB somewhere, or search. the truth is out there.

They also used RTV to hold the heat tiles on...

Do you still want to do anything like NASA does?

After multiple discussion I believe that the colletive wisdom of the PBB decided that square was strong in specific direction while round was stronger overall in multi-directions.

Cat cages are square.

Square will deflect less. Try it yourself.
