Go to a fawking doctor! The pain may get worse. Cold water flush, and a cold compress (ice pack) on your eyes will help.

Slice a raw potato and put it on your eyes. Sounds stupid but I have been told it works.
Hope it helps. James |

What shade lense are you running in your hood, and what weld process? If you cant weld with just your hood without getting welders eye, then your running the wrong shade.

If you are using an autodark hood check the lens and make sure the hole thing is going dark. I had one go bad in just the lower corners. Hurts like hell especialy if you are running 3/32 FCAW all day.
I have herd the potato thing works, but you can also get drops from the doctor that help alot. If it happened at work they should cover it. |

Yeah its called flash burn.. it feels like your eyes have about 10 pounds of sand in them.. and you get it from doing stupid crap like you did (natures way of saying dont do that!).. putting potatos on your eyes wont do anything.. you need to put the juice from a potato in your eyes.. expect your eyes to feel like this for the better part of a day.

my welding teacher told me this was bullshit... Take a hammer and smash your thumb till blood oozes out from under your fingernail.. then you can focus on that pain, instead of your eyes... ive been TOLD that works...

juicy raw potatoe slices covering your eyes DOES work...been there done that...was able to SEE without any pain after about 4-5 hours...
BTW, dark sunglasses WILL NOT protect you if you left the hood at home and really need to weld some shit for about 4 hours.

Well now that I can actualy type and somewhat open one eye, I can explain alittle more than earlier. I have been welding for years, also welding at this plant for over a year now. I have flash burned my eyes before but nothin like last night. Yes most of my flash burn was from the 6 guys behind me. I truely believe that it was mainly caused by not havin my shades on. I use a Speedglass auto helmet. We run a shade of 3/11 and my safety glasses are um well dark. I started a new procedure of checking over the frames before they go into peirce and gage to bring up our FTTQ "first time through quality" I had myself on one side of the frame and another welder opisite of me. While I had my hood up he would pull the trigger to make a reapir weld. Not his fault due to the amount of volume we push through our line we must haul ass. There are 186 welds per frame and are repairing around 45 welds per frame,
we generaly run any were between 34-42 parts per hour. Any way, how come the doctors can not perscribe to me or u for that matter, the same numbing eye drops they have in there office. I swear my eyes felt awesome for about 15 minutes after he put the special drops in my eyes, but it wore off quickly. I went and got my perscription filled and threw some drops in my eyes and no numbing! I was pissy from no sleep so I went back and showed him the eye drops I recieved from Wally world and asked if this was what he perscribed? He said yes, hence me sayin why are my eyes still bleeding?? He said they were not the same as what he used. I said why can't I get some of those drops? Not allowed to perscribe them to u! What the fawk? Sorry for the long post. Oh and I have never had any luck with potatoes either. Thanks for the replies, Red eyed Steve! |

Find another doctor to prescribe you the pontocaine drops.
Most won't prescribe it because if you get something in your eyes while they are numb you can really fawk them up. I keep a bottle in the medicine cabinet just in case... Last edited by whistle pig; 04-15-2006 at 06:13 PM. |

You should have told the doc either he could give you some to take with you, or you were going to hang around the waiting room all day and make him keep dosing you every time it started hurting again.
That or pull the old "Hey, look at that" (pointing behind him). Snatch the bottle and run!

Does getting flash burned hurt your night vision at all?
What are some of the long term effects?
