...so since i moved to arizona i've wanted to see a scorpion...

...and tonight i got my wish.... walked in to my apartment with my grocieries, herd my girlfriend gasp and seen the little fellow hanging out on my kitchen floor. i immediatly got a flashback of my irish heritage and did some sort of jig turning the poor little fellow into soup... i've wanted to see one....just not on the kitchen floor of my apartment that i'm paying almost $1000 a month for, but i guess t comes with the territory, i'll take scorpions over pennsylvania any day.

here is a google image search of what it used to look like.....i started my dance routine way before i could whip out a camera

i guess it was a bark scorpion? how do i try to keep the little guys out (besides gas and matches...)? what can i do to keep my pet rabbit safe from them?

feed it to a really big snake... then you won't have to worry about it getting stung by scorpions...

why the hell do you have a pet rabbit in the first place?...

To keep them out of your house, make sure that you seal off any small holes. Make sure that your doors have good seals on the bottom. I have also heard that bushes and crap up beside your house attract them.

Personally, I would rather have one of those in my house than the fawking cockroaches I get everyonce in a while.

Wait...your living in the southwest now. Arent you suposed to pull out your 6 shooter and blast em? Or is that rattle snakes? or Indians? I cant remember.

Its ok, were still wrestling grizzly bears and living in log cabins up here I hear the railroads supposed to be coming through soon.

As far as keeping critters out... dont leave your doors open any longer than it takes to walk through them. Make sure your window screens are good. Check for holes under your sinks and behind the dryer. If they want in, their gonna find it.

how's things? are you coming to PHX for any of the comps??? let me know!

i didn't get around to picking up a 6 shooter yet, and i just thought my M44 would be overkill.

the apartment is on the second floor above my garage and remodeled right before we moved in (which was 4/1/06). all the plumbing seams to be tightly sealed, but i'm going to check again today. the doors seam to seal well, and i'm going to check the seal on the garage door today....

I'm thinking about setting some mousetraps for roaches. We don't see them often, but there was this one the other day that was probably over 3" long on the ceiling. I couldn't get to him, he dropped to the floor and hid. We'll duel again....

Hmm... scorpions. Here in GA, we had them in my house all the time growin up. I was stung/bit multiple times. Mean buggers they are. They came in worse when we had really wet weather. They're probably not as big as those guys y'all have in Aridzona, but they sure seem more plentiful.

If it was like the one pictured, it wasn't a bark scorpion.

Bark Scorpions are lighter in color:

If the scorpion has a darker torso/back and/or a thicker striped tail (like the one you posted an image of) then it is likely the more common Stripe Tailed Scorpion (also known as Arizona Devil Scorpion):

Or maybe a very young Giant (or Desert) Hairy Scorpion:

its really hard for me to say, i didn't get to study it too closely... the only thing left in tact was the tail, which had no stripes and was pretty thin...and i think a 6" scorpion would be enough to scare me right into the arctic

Sounds like it was a bark scorpion then.

Does your apartment complex have palm trees? Bark Scorpions LOVE palm trees.

One of the most fascinating things about scorpions is that they fluoresce under ultraviolet light, probably due to the complex substance in the epidermis that makes it impermeable. To truly appreciate the lives of scorpions, take a black light out to the desert on a warm, moonless night. You’ll be amazed at how common scorpions are in the undisturbed Arizona Upland habitat. You can also use this technique to observe these ancient nocturnal arachnids as they detect and capture prey, court and mate, and dig burrows. These behaviors are never seen when scorpions are encountered by turning over rocks and other materials where they spend the daylight hours. Not only can you find scorpions in nature using ultraviolet light, you can use this same technique to look for scorpions in and around your home.
useful info.

Bugs... no probem.

Snakes- been working in cottonmouth infested areas for ten years, not been bitten. Yet.

Spiders- guess I've been lucky with those too....

Ticks- They don't hurt when they bite, but the crap they can give you may haunt your health for years.
