I've had the same problem with my 85 4runner in higher altitudes, but it doesn't smoke when I am in lower elevations. I am also curious to why this happens.

My '85 22R does the same thing. Don't know why, I've just learned to live with it.

Did I read somewhere the 85 fuel injection is analog and the newer ones are digital?

You would think an altitude related problem might be because it runs too rich at high altitude, air is thinner but same amount of fuel. Maybe the system is adjusting it as much as it can to run leaner, but hits the limit of adjustment beyond a certain point.

At higher elevations the engine will generally run rich, which will "wash" the cylinders and combustion chambers with more fuel, this will cause a little extra "smoke" including some oil slipping past the rings into the combustion chamber and get burned. It probably happens more with high mileage engines and carb'd engines.
