Transfer case options... Tera Low, etc.
I'm trying to determine the best transfer case set-up for a CJ that a friend and I are building... we've hit a bit of a wall.
Here's the current set-up: 304 Jeep (Warner) T18a (wide ratio); 6.4:1 Model 20; 2.03:1 D44s; 5.38s 38" tires Current crawl ratio: 81:1 The CJ recently had 4.56s and 35s and, if our math is right, the 5.38s and 38s are pretty close to the "final" crawl ratio. And, while 81:1 is good (I think it's great), John, the owner, wants more. The Tera-Low puts the Model 20 at 3.15:1. and the crawl ratio at 126:1 - that would suffice. But, a D300, with the 4:1 conversion would put that ratio at 160:1 - even better... . The problem/question: The 20 is a great case, the 300 is slightly better - and the Tera-Low kit for the 300 is cheaper and 25% lower. BUT, we're 80% certain that the 300 will not bolt up to the T-18 without an expensive adapter. So, with the cost of the Tera-low, the adapter, etc, the t-case is getting into (not quite) the Atlas range - too much $$$. I understand that a 300 from a 1980 Scout will solve this... if we could actually find one. Is there something we're missing? Is there another option - a case that will bolt to the T-18, that's strong and has good low-range conversion options? Thanks! -Mark |

the scout 300's are rare but can be found. I had a buddy of mine just bought a 300 texas pattern with the bull gear and and a 4 to 1 kit in it for $1000.
Take some time and look around

Jeep never ran the D300 behind a 4 speed tranny?
Anyway, you can figure a Scout D300 will be $300-$500 dollars unless you can steal it (so to speak) from someone who is not paying attention. The IH guys are all over those. You can probably buy an adapter for that much and run whatever. I had a Tera low 3.15 in my D20 and it worked real well for the time I had it behind a wide T98 in my Scout 800.
