Lets talk about Rafting, canoeing, kayaking

Where have you been? Favorites?

The retro wheeling thread reminded me of rafting the Arkansas in Co.

Did a bunch of canoeing in Hardy Arkansas on the Spring river.

Pics?

I have run some rivers in Cali, North and middle fork of the American, Yuba, and Cherry Creek. All great trips.

I've got 24 miles this year on the lower Illinois in Oklahoma. Mainly beer drinking in a huge raft w/ a bunch of turbo sluts. My friends got some land where everyone floats by, it's awsome to watch the tourists get all drunk and try to keep they're canoe right side up. Seen a guy the other day in a canoe all by himself......sitting in the very front of the canoe . Floated a kayak for the first time this year, defenatly alot of fun.

The Spring is fun, but a good family river is the Buffalo. Nice easy moving water with lots of nice bluffs to view. You can float along at about 2-3 miles an hour an just enjoy yourself. When my wife and I take the kids, we end up taking 8 hours to do a 3-4 hour float from all the sandbar stops.

I've spent dozens of hours in a canoe. When I was a wee lad my Dad and big brother built a 17' cedar strip canoe (my brother is actually in the process of reglassing it right now). We used to take weekend float trips camping on the bank along the way. It's not a white water boat.

I've done a small bit of rafting but nothing major...mostly just floating down the river next to a cooler.

I'd really love to get a couple of nice flat water kayaks for the wife and I. Of couse then I'd have to find time to actually use them.

Haven't tried rafting, but occasionally kayak in Santa Cruz and Monterey. I've tried some small lakes in the area too and a couple trips in the Delta.

I have been on Some great rafting trips, Green, Colorado, and the San Juan rivers in Utah. The American, Trinity, Klamath, Merced and others here in Ca and the Rogue in Oregon. The Eel in NV, plus many others I am sure. We used to go on 2 or 3 rivers a summer when I was in high school. Has been a long time since I have gone though. Some of our Green river trips would be as many a 7-9 days on the river. I remember as many as 20 years ago packing all out waste out with us, it was standard operation as it is fast becoming more common with four wheeling. We used an ammo can with a seat on it and plastic garbage bags, replaced daily, with a bit of lysol thrown in for good measure. The BLM placed human waste bins at popular take out spots, and although smelly, no waste was left along the river.

I'll second that, spent 3 days on the Buffalo and the White. Good times! Thinking about heading down later this summer

Whitewater in Montana sucks.

Rafting sucks.
Canoeing sucks.
Kayaking really sucks.
Our snowpack sucked.
Spring rains have sucked, too. I hear Colorado and California are good.

kthxbye.

Hmmmm....

Rafted:
California -
The Truckee (almost died in a 2 raft flipover and complete cluser fawk on the upper Truckee near Floristan)
Yuba
Feather
Smith

Nevada -
Carson (above and below Lahontan)
Walker

Rafted and Drift boated the Smith River for the past 6 years...

My favorite of now is the Smith. Even now, there are not as many people as the other rivers (even in the way back when)...and it's frikking BEAUTIFUL plus the water is Crystal CLEAR!

Ocoee River about 45 minutes from us. Can't believe something this beautiful is so close to home.

Went rafting in 2004, my first time. It was a blast. Hopefully we'll go again this summer.

I'll third the Buffalo, you can literally spend 4 days going only 8 miles, there is so much to do in and on that river. Of course, a lot of alcohol helps as well.

The White River in the same area (Northern Arkansas) has great trout fishing.

I've rafted the Ocoee River (location of kayaking competion for the summer olympics) and the Ohiopyle River in West Virginia. I've canoed every major and minor river/stream/creek in southeast Indiana.

One of the best times of my life.

Moab, Utah. Pic is after Satan's Gut. Needless to say, our guide didn't keep it right side up. Ended up swimming through all of it until it calmed down enough to get on top.

That's a seven man raft + supplies. Six of us are on top. We lost one.

Something like 5000 cfs, (or cfm.. i forget) river was shut down to rafting the next day and we were last to go through that day.

One guy found god that day, another one got jacked up pretty good, father couldn't hold on and floated down the river by himself, I got a scar on my foot from hitting the river bed. (yea forgot to *tuck* when we went under)

I have to agree with you. It all sucks here in MT. I have floated the Guadalupe in New Braunsfels, TX and is was some extreme whitewater! We almost flipped out innertubes!
