BigToy's Top Truck rebuild

After taking a month or so off after TTC I'm finally ready to start working the truck again. The major push to get it back together happened July 1st when I spotted for Tim (Wolf359) at a local event because I didn't have my rig together. I haven't spotted for anyone for a LONG time and it was kinda fun but not quite the same as running your own rig.

I have 90% of the parts I need to get it back up and running (better that before). I'll be spliting my time and resources between the toy and the on going F450 build.

Being that most of my TTC carnage was caused by a faulty weld on the drivers rear 404 portal flange, I decided to make sure that wasn't going to happen again. I've had a spare housing narrowed 4.5" for the front diff for a year or so. I took it to Mark at Rocky Mountain Offroad and had him grind out the weld that was originally there and had him lay down a nice thick, hot bead. I'll be figuring out some sort of gussets aswell just as added insurance. I also got a new rear housing, it also has a beefy weld on it and I'm sure there will be no breakage issues with it.

Two new narrowed housings:

Maybe I should back up a minute and post up some of the carnage pics:

What I broke:

-16" Fox Shock
-Currie Anti-Rock arm and hiems
-rear steer hydraulic cylinder
-rear tie rod
-three 3/4x3/4 chromo hiems
-one 44" Bogger
-3 widened 12 bolt hummer beadlocks (that weren't even mine!)
-one narrowed 404 housing
-one inner axle shaft
-one 404 CV joint
-one 404 steering knuckle
-rear 3rd member

While winching and driving (while laying on my side) out of the canyon in the Tank Trap, I finished off my motor which wasn't too healthy after the new double roller timing chain let loose and stripped half the teeth off the upper timing sprocket. The motor was puffing a bit of blue before we went down so I had planned on yanking it out and going through it this fall anyway.

I got it out the other day and there weren't chunks of anything floating around in the pan but the oil pressure was WAY down after the canyon recovery. The motor was put together last April and only had a 6-8 runs on it. When I pulled the heads off there was no cross hatch left at all and all the bearings looked like shit:

Huh? No dig at all. The guys from the shop that narrowed the diff originally and I are on good terms, all is well. In fact, one of them was in town tonight and he hand delivered a new rear housing for me. We have discussed everything at length and worked everything out

Anyway, a friend of mine owns a machine shop so I dropped the motor off the other day. I was expecting the heads to be cracked (vortecs are notorious for cracking near the exhaust seats) but they were in good shape. What I wasn't expecting was the block to be twisted! The motor got over heated a couple times (air in the system, rear rad issues) and it looks like it really made a mess. Jason managed to track down a solid rebuildable 400 block so we'll be using that.

Daniel from USA6x6 got a hold of me soon after I got the TTC invite call to offer me (like the rest of competitors) a set of double beadlock rims to run at the event. Unfortunatley they didn't arrive on time. I got them about 2 weeks ago and was a little surprized there was no "USA6x6" rock ring. I thought he had offered them knowing he'd get some advertising from the deal but no markings anywhere...I'm not complaining, they're free rims!

We had to have the least amout of loss/damage of the bunch.

Please spend a few hours over at wolfs, so he can get that heap on the trail

Im looking forward to wheeling with you guys again.

P.S. tell Phish I bought some animal cookies last week with icing on them.

No, making some changes. A bit more power, shaving some weight while beefing up some weak areas and trying to lower it a few inches too. I refuse to buy a replacement Fox Shock (because I hate them!) so it's getting triple rate Kings. I didn't really like the single ended ag cylinder for the rear steer so I have another balanced ram coming from Station. I'll got a slightly higher stall converter (2000rpm) made too. The motor will get a more aggressive cam (undecided on what yet), a windage tray and a swivel pickup to help with the off camber oiling. Everything including the motor should be here by tueday.

Haha, I spent 4 full evenings and one full day over at Tims wrenching....but that was to get the Cruiser up and running for the Drumheller event God it felt so wrong...we literally had to jack it up and out of the dirt. It had fallen off it's blocks and the diffs had sunk like 6" into the ground......I felt like Dr. Frankenstien resurrecting the dead!

Animal cookies......since you work at FedEx I think you should send a case of those tasty little fawkers up here for us! Oh yeah, and some Tecnu....Doug was right " That shit will fuck you up!" Ryan got Fucked up with a capital "F"

That was just before we welded it. It got wiped and hosed down with a couple cans of brake clean.

can't help on the Trail rig project, but I did my part on the F450 project .

I'm glad to see you motivated on the rig again I know when you left TTC you were in a “Fuck wheeling” mode, so I’m glad to se you’ve come back to the game.

Yeah, you helped out the tow rig project a ton! Thanks again

It wasn't so much of a "fuck wheeling" mood, it was more like a "this is going to be really fawking expensive to put back together and I don't have the motivation right now to do it" mood I have watched TTC for 10yrs then finally get my chance to go and things don't work out so well. If it were a normal event it wouldn't have been so bad because you can always go back next time and redeem yourself! Unfortunately my Top Truck legacy is Crash and Burn! I'm glad we had the opportunity to go and it was worth all the carnage. That shit would have broken at the next event I went too so I'm not too stressed about it!

So typical of Daniel. Can you imagine being a paying customer?

Wow dude. Your positive attitude is amazing. When I was in RTCC and my shit wasn't running right, I was losing my mind. After the fact, when I look back on it, it wasn't so bad, and I had a good time despite breakage, however, your casual, calm response to what amounts to an almost completely destroyed truck is unbelievable.

I wish you were closer, I'd love to give you a hand wrenching. Anyone that has such a positive attitude after so much carnage and destruction on their truck is a guy I'd love to be on the trail with.

What kind of EFI do you run that supports a fairly big cam? If you're running a 2k RPM stall, I'd imagine you have a fairly serious cam. I went pretty conservative on camshaft with my recent engine build to try to keep the EFI happy...
