Took some cool pics of Fordyce Lake Dam today

Shot of the outlet from on top of the dam

Pic from the center of the dam looking onto the lake

Pic of the over flow gates

I decided to hike down to the outlet and check it out. That shiat was LOUD, kind of like a jet dragster. This pic is shot from about 10-15 feet from the jet stream.

Close up of the exhaust nozzle. CRAZY

How deep is the water (from water surface to outlet)?
For every 2.31 feet of water depth is 1 PSI.
23.1 feet = 10 PSI
231 feet = 100 PSI.

Do they not have a hydro-electric turbine on the discharge?
If not, that is a huge waste of very cheap power, even though it is only intermittent.

No sh!t?

What do you suppose the pressure is of the Powerhouse near my place (Deer Creek Powerhouse). Here's approx. specs:

The water flows into the powerhouse from a 30" pipe from an up-stream forebay approx. 1000' higher than the powerhouse.

This 30" stream of water gets reduced to two 2" streams. (30" dia. down to two 2" dia. streams)

These in turn, blast against a couple of big-ass Pelton wheels to drive two generators about 15-20' in diameter.

Shoots a stream about 100' long from each "bay" on the output side, before its picked up again in another series of pipes and flumes which provides (western) Nevada County with their drinking water. Truckee is on its own seperate system.

I'd be more impressed if you posted a pic of you putting your hand in the flow from the nozzle

If the elevation difference between the surface of the lake and the discharge is 1000 feet, then the pressure is 432.9 PSI static. It will actually be less because friction losses in the piping.

If you have a water storage tank with an elevation of 1000, and have a 1000 miles of pipe that goes to 0' elevation, the static pressure will be 432.9 PSI. Doesn't matter if it is a large lake or a 3/4" pipe full of water, static pressure is simply elevation.

Pipe sizes and volume don't mean a thing to static pressure. The 30" reducing to a 2" doesn't increase the pressure either, all it does it cause proportion pressure loss based on the velocity of the water in the pipe and the diameter of the pipe.

So you start with 432.9 PSI, but as soon as the water starts moving pressure is lost due to friction. The pressure loss through the 30" is minimal because the larger diameter. The pressure loss through the 2" is tremendous.
In that case, they are using the 2" as an orfice plate (restrictor plate) to limit the flow.

If the dam is 1000 ft high, that water is coming out at 173 mph based on Velocity = sqrt (2*gravity*height) that's definitely worth of sticking your hand out in front of it and telling us about it
