First and foremost - what the hell were you thinking when you took it upon yourself to create not one, but two new illegal trails in Montrose? The BLM did not give you permission to build the trails, and you have done massive resource damage by cutting down trees
, moving boulders and creating winch points. All of this was done without the BLM's permission! I'm disappointed for two reasons: first you created two new trails without permits, permission or environmental assessments, etc. second, because I am the Stay The Trail Program Manager and 4x4 rep to COHVCO I am the one that got the phone call from the Montrose County Sheriff and the BLM asking if I knew anything about these trails or who created them. My answer was no, and nor do I intend to find out who you are because that means I am a witness to your stupidity, which I prefer to stand clear of. This is now a criminal investigation. I suggest that you cease your involvement of the trail creation before the case against who ever you are amounts to more than you ever expected plus jail time. If you are caught, tough. Maybe you should have thought that through before you started your chainsaw. I am absolutely livid and disgusted by the fact that someone in our community would destroy resources including vegetation and the landscape to illegally build a trail. I hope justice is served because your actions and your accomplice's actions have jeopardized and negated the positive working relationship with the Montrose BLM Field Office. Stay on the trail that is a legal route so we can keep trails open. No new trails or bypasses without the land management agencies approval. Your actions close trails for everyone. To anyone thinking about attempting these two new routes (they are the two not marked in Montrose that only look partially complete), do not drive these routes or you will be included in the criminal investigation. The BLM is working on getting them blocked off so there are no mistakes as to what is legal and what is not. Whoever you geniuses are that built these trails, you're the reason stuff gets closed, there are plenty of legal ways to go about getting more trails and helping maintain current ones. I don't even live in Colorado, and this pisses me off.

When they are caught, please post names. I'm sure that most vendors here would like to know who not to sell to.

Val I hope you are also planning on sharing some of this information with COHVCO, CoA4WDCi, etc.
Let's find the yahoo's and turn them in. - Shawn |

Remember, there is a criminal investigation ongoing. There are pictures of the damage. The BLM has them and so does the Montrose County Sheriff's office.
No, this does not affect Die Trying, Calamity, Cactus, Topless, etc. Those trails will remain open.

We have met the enemy. And "they" is "us".
Good luck with the investigation. I do hope it is successful. And, here is an opprotunity for the "organized groups" to garner some publicity by pitching in to correct the damage ASAP.

OK, now with that said, here's my take on this, having been down this road in this area. Does the road building (if you want to call it that) look like it was done by someone with the idea of building an extreme type trail that the hard core types would like? Or does it look like someone just wanted to build trail thru the woods just for the hell of it. My reason for asking this is we had a similar situation in Chokecherry Canyon a few years ago, it was obviously a hard core trail that this certain individual decided needed a backhoe to build it...on BLM managed land. If it is a hardcore type, you look to a certain group of locals, there are the hard core types that are very conscientious, and there are those that love the 5+ stuff but are not prone to use their heads in certain situations.
Montrose is not a hugely populated area, you know who the groups are, and you know who to talk to (and I'm sure so does local law enforcement). Anyway, I was wanting to see photos (not in a public forum ), I guess you could say out of curiosity as to what exactly was going on.And oh yeah, Peter, knock it off, just because you don't agree with me on some things doesn't mean you have to act childish. I've been playing games with the eco-nazis since you were a small child, and my credentials and reputatation are pretty damn straight.
