LTB or TRXUS Radial which would you get (sorry 'bout another tire thread)
Ok I know this is one more of the tire threads, but I have a specific question. I have run the LTB and I love it. Grabs and grabs all day long and possibly the best off-road tire I have ever driven. But, for all its off road prowess, it does have some draw backs. I am looking for more of a trail tire and not so much a rock tire. You know, Sierra back roads and occasional rocks. I also need to consider driving to the forest trails. With the LTB, the flat spot in the morning kills me and a short wheel based FJ40 makes for a bumpy ride. They lack road snow driving and wet road conditions. Sometimes they are down right scary when it rains (especially with the rear locked) and they do wear fairly quickly.
I am thinking about getting the same tire again but I am also considering the TRXUS radial. I do not have any experience with this tire so I would like comments from people that ran this tire. It appears to have the same tread pattern minus the side lugs of the LTB and it is a radial tire that has a good rating in snowy roads and wet roads. They also have an excellent rating off road. What are people’s comments on this tire? In short, if you have run the TRXUS, would you buy it again and why? Or which would you get? Please don’t throw out another tire as a suggestion. I would like information only on the TRXUS or why you would buy one tire over the other. |

I had a friend who ran the trxus on his DD 4runner. Good choice for a tire that needs to share road and trail duty. Seemed to wear well.

I would keep the LTB's and deal with the flatspots vs putting up with a tire that doesn't perform as good.
Or you could always get the Thornbirds, those things are pretty sweet.

both Lance and I have run or run the Truxxus and they kick ass in the snow,do fine in wet weather wear well and are fairly quite on the road.
off road they are gunna be just what they look like, a very agressive mud terrain.better than lets say a bfg mt and less then a krawler. all in all I will run another set in a heart beat. probally this winter. snowy sierra mountain driving on a daily basis. did I mention we need 4low just to get down our road home in he winter

IMO, the Truxus MT is the ultimate DD/weekend offroader tire. I had a set on my TJ when it was my DD and loved them. Much better than BFG MTs which I also had. Better on the road, better on wet roads, MUCH better in snow, MUCH better in mud, better on rocks, tougher sidewalls, just plain better. The BFGs do last longer though. I got just under 30k out of my Trxus on the TJ. That included 2 roundtrips from NC to CO. Great tires and I'd run them again in a heartbeat on a DD.
I currently run LTBs on the TJ. It is no longer a DD. They SUCK on the highway. That's just the way it is with a bias ply. There is really no comparison between the LTB and the Trxus in the mud. The LTB is far superior. The Trxus is a great mud tire for a streetable MT, but it won't touch the LTB. I really liked the Trxus on rock. In certain situations, it's better than the LTB in this department, but that's mainly on slabs. The Trxus has good sidewalls for a radial, but if you're heading out to the stump fields, get in some really sharp rock gardens, or going through cutovers and whatnot. Don't be surprised if one gets cut. I never cut one, but they're a radial and I treated them as such. Bottom line - if you see a lot of mud or get in a lot of situations that can cut a sidewall, go with the LTB. If not and you value the street ability of the Trxus, I don't think you'll be disappointed. |

As for the comments on the TRXUS, thank you very much. I believe for my use, that sounds like a better tire choice. I do drive my cruiser to work 3 days a week (like 5 miles) and I have to drive about an hour and half to hit the mountains. As with building towards a camping trail rig (unlike my old CJ that was a rockcrawler and very limited to trailoring) and having to drive on snowy roads in the winter to get there, the TRXUS wins. Thanks for the positive feedback. Last edited by slickrock; 09-04-2006 at 10:59 AM. |

I think it depends on what you are running in.
For street they are fine. I've been through PA snow w/ them and had no complaints and they are fine in the rain. Out in AZ, they worked really well I thought. I did cut a sidewall, but they definitely earned their keep. I ran them pretty hard. In PA, I also cut a sidewall, but it was on some pretty sharp rock w/ loose dirt (lots of wheel spin) but they did pretty well up there also. In FL, they clog up way too easy, but I don't really consider FL wheelin, well, wheelin. It's all swamp and chit and just mud bogging where the best tire is stiff skinny tractor tires.

From the sounds of that, I think you'd be very happy with the Trxus MT. |
