Lighter fluid for BBQ illegal? WTF?!?

I just got the ass neighbor "horror" story and couldn't help but laugh.

Background:
New neighbor bought empty lot next to my parents' vacation rental(sign PROMINANTLY displayed that it is rental) He builds house up.

Story:
Apparently new neighbors both have health issues. Recently, one of the renters fired up the BBQ with lighter fluid. Neighbor took offense to it and got VERY confrontational to the renter. One claim is he was going to report them.

Is using lighter fluid for a BBQ illegal in CA now?

As far as I know, there is no issue with that even along the beach.

Now I'm halfway tempted to take a week vacation and use a full can of fluid to fire up the BBQ... twice a day

No shit, whether I use it or not is irrelevant, I want to be able to use it if I want

OS, definately wasn't a spare the air day and the odds of a propane unit going down there are zero It is a rental... and it is on the ocean. Spending a hefty chunk of change on one every three years isn't too good.

Plus isn't spare the air day just a "recommendation"?

As for me, I use a chimney. I don't use propane... food doesn't taste as good to me

If it was illegal, I highly doubt Vons/Safeway/Albertsons would sell it .

However, it would make sense if there is a clause in the lease agreement disallowing the use of charcoal BBQ's (and with it lighter fluid). Not illegal, but a definite (yet immaterial) breach of contract.

EDIT: I didn't read it carefully enough to realize its your parents rental and the asswad neighbors are not on the same property and within the same lease agreement.

My son, now 16, will still to this day tell the story how we camped when he was 4 and "dad lit the ground on fire"

This happened back in Maine a couple years ago.

We (2 adults, 4 kids under 6 years) were cold and wet and the kiddos wanted to eat.

So, I sprinkle some white gas on damp wood with dry kindling in an attempt to get a fire going. It wasn't much, maybe a half a cup or so.

I stand back and use one of those long lighters and WHOOSH!!! I felt the air being sucked from behind me into the fire.

After I made sure I wasn't on fire, Owen, who was 3 at the time, asked me if I had more gas to put on the fire.

I like that kid.
