Name this bird...

I didn't get a pic of it. It flew away before I had a chance, with a small child and large dog under its wing! It was HUGE! Well, city girl huge Easily 2 feet high or more. It was black and from what I was able to see of its face I think it had some red on it. It had that wrinkley foreskin looking kinda head...not the pretty feathery kind. I don't live in the country dammit...I live in the burbs! There aren't supposed to be birds that size here! It was NOT a crow. Possibly a buzzard or a vulture?

It was at the shelter, across the street. Maybe thats how they get rid of people now

Is it common for these things to cruise thru neighborhoods like mine? I can see if I was driving and saw it, but it was almost in my damned yard!

You'll see em around the neighborhoods occasionally. Fucking things have no fear.

The other day we had a smallish large bird (if you follow that logic ) sitting on our fence before it flew away. Was either a young hawk or vulture but it was quite large for where it was

Usually they will be on some road kill right on the shoulder of the highway. They will wait until you are .005 seconds away from hitting them and THEN try to fly away. I hit one a long time ago. I looked in the rear view mirror to see him rolling down the highway. He then got up, shook his head, and walked off limping.

Oh, and the correct terminology is "buzzard". If you say Turkey Vulture, people will either not know what you are talking about or think you are from New York or something.

I thought buzzards were everywere?

There are lots of them in Wisconsin, so I assume they are everywhere in between. Saw a big group last weekend. They usually leave for the winter.
