2006 Turkey on the Rocks Wheelin Pics & Vids

Still working on the pics/video from Sat/Sun but here are some pictures from Thur/Fri. I am including the rant from my webpage because we were all shocked at how trashed the area was just weeks after a huge cleanup.

Table Mesa is in trouble. Just weeks after a cleanup which filled several large dumpsters and netted at least 4 burned out cars the place is looking like shit again. Amazingly the culprits are in plain view everywhere you look: it's the shooters. Despite the no dumping signs posted everywhere I saw people plugging away at car doors, hoods, computers and old appliances. The most pathetic display was seen on Thanksgiving afternoon as I drove in the road towards camp. Off to the side of the road I saw a guy put his water bottle down and approximately 20 feet away from himself which he then proceeded to try to plug it full of holes. Thank god water bottles aren't known to attack or this guy would have met a quick end.

I pulled into camp (which was relatively spotless two weeks ago when we stayed overnight) and was greeted to piles of trash and cans littering the area. Big surprise in the mound of bacon boxes, egg shells and paper plates I found a pile of unspent .22 rounds and a receipt from the place the jackasses bought the ammo: Wal-Mart. The trail of Capri-Sun kiddie drink containers that wound thru camp confirmed that the cretins were also transferring their total disregard for our public lands to their offspring.

An unsightly desert isn't the only problem out there. I believe it is only a matter of time before someone is shot out there based on groups of shooters we saw plopping down in every convenient spot and firing away in every direction including parallel and perpendicular to roads and heavily traveled washes. The situation is totally out of control and only going to get worse until someone either sets up contained shooting areas, bans shooting all together or closes the area altogether. I predict the easiest solution for the land use agencies will be their top choice, guess which one that will be......*

So once again the first thing we do after pulling into camp is get out the garbage bags and start picking up trash. We netted several bags of trash and 1/2 a garbage bag of crushed beer cans. I made the chore into a game for my son, he loves hauling stuff in his toy truck. After setting up camp we did a quick shakedown run for Jack's buggy and ran a few trails before sundown (Collateral Damage, Terminator and Judgment Day). On the way in to the first trail we discovered a new burned out car that had appeared within the last 4 days in the river bottom.

Friday morning we ran Dirty Sanchez. This trail is super tight and dusty with non-stop ledges and cracks. The first obstacle is a tripple waterfall.

Here's the last waterfall of the 3. The base of the fall has a pair of undercuts which makes climbing it a challenge.

Jay under his rig removing the rear driveshaft. At first we thought he took out a ring and pinion but after removing the shaft we discovered it was one of his transfer cases.

One of the wider spots in the trail.

Jason heading up the 3rd fall.

After the 3rd fall and trying to squeeze further up the trail.

After the trailride we gathered some firewood.

Pictures from the upper part of Collateral Damage later that day.

Jack's rig was back, fresh from a buggy makeover. Out came a tired 22re/toy 5spd/dual toy cases and in went a 5.0/C4/Stak combo and front links.

More pics and video later, the good stuff is still to come.......

it is a shame that turds who frequent spots that we (wheelers) also frequent dont have the decency to clean up after themselves. just goes to show you that mississippi is not the only home to thoughtless rednecks....

after being there saturday into sunday i have to agree the target shooters are a HUGE safety concern and the litter was disgusting. Every where you look there was a pile of shot up trash. I'd hate to be on the soap box of closing an area to any sort of recreation, but i think the weekend snipers need to stop by at ben avery range.

We camped accross the trail from you, next to the guys with the formula toy, i walked to the end of the trail to take a whizz and a bullet passed through the tree maybe 3'-4' above my head. scared the shit out of me, thats for sure.

We left at first light on sunday morning when the riflemen were filing in for the day. There was easily twice as much trash on the sides of the trail from just one day before. It was really quite disturbing.

but in other news, we got to meet some cool people, do a little wheeling and spent some time in the outdoors. it was a good time, except for almost getting shot in the head. thanks for the invite. You should have mentioned to bring your extra Sobe bottles in addition to the trash bags and wood

Nice job on picking up the trash. The unfortunate side of this is that there will ALWAYS be slobs and disrespectfull lowlifes. There will always need to be people like you (and me and most of the PBB hopefully) who pick up after the assholes. It is just a small price we pay I suppose.

My hats off to you for taking the initiative and I look forward to dragging my buddy out there to come wheeling with you guys!

Your boy kicks ass - what a cool kid. What size tires are on that truck?

My sincere thanks for your tireless clean-up efforts. One day I hope I can come and help.

Great pics as usual.

Just out of interest - how far is this area from, say, Phoenix?

if you look for "table mesa road" on a map you will be close, near where table mesa road meets I-17 north of phoenix. it took us about an hour to make it from the south east side of Phoenix metro with little traffic. its south of black canyon city, but north of new river.

I'm sorry to hear that you are having such trouble with lowlife littering pieces of shit. We clean up after them here too. I have picked up large trash bags full of shotgun shells and clay pidgeons as well as computers, matresses, car parts, diapers etc and all of the normal trash that car campers(asshole rednecks generally) leave behind. Its a sad world we live in when there are so many careless fucked up people that we have to spend days cleaning up after them.

Keep it up. It does help!

Looks like a killer trail!

awesome pics.

The shooters are one of our biggest problems up here too..shells and target objects everywhere. A few trail rides ago had to duck behind a rig real quick as we heard buckshot spraying the tree's above our heads.

Most Idiotic thing I have seen was some motorbike riders riding down the logging road stop get off there bikes and started blasting a handgun aimed into the forest were there are trails cut in.
