Who's been on Amtrak recently??

I'm gonna be helping a friend move up to Washington state next week. Driving one of his u-haul (or whatever rental) up there and thinking about taking Amtrak back to Sacramento. He's gonna be near Kelso and the 'Coast Starlight' makes a stop there and in Sactown.

Anybody have any recent experience with Amtrak? I haven't been on a train since I left Shippey Hill in England. This route has a dining car and a lounge. I guess I'll figure it out but if ya got any tips, let's hear em...

It's not that bad. But then again when I take it I grab the train to Martinez from Sac then take the water shuttle into the Bay Area. I have no idea how a longer trip actually compares. I do know they haven't derailed yet, which is very impressive.

I did the Seattle-Sac Coast Starlight back in 92.

Trouble was, i took the fucking thing UP there from Sac, as well.

Long ass trip, 22hrs each way, sucked balls, cramped, trailer-freak types on the train, and i bumped my eyebrow on the windowsill after falling asleep in a seat, had a wound for over a week cuz of that.

Overview; it sucked royal ass.

Holy mackerel Steph... You've actually lost 89 lbs?? (read yer blog)
I lost 10 lbs once. But then I looked behind me and I FOUND IT...

Seriously though, that's awesome. How did you do it??

Oh yeah, the train. I used to love taking the short train from Shippey Hill to Ely, then catching the express to London. Clackady-clack, clackady-clack all the way. I imagine they're much smoother these days. I'm looking forward to it. Prolly go down to the dining car, have a few beers and snooze after it gets dark...

That's why I asked for RECENT experience, although I appreciate your input. It's about 17 hours from Kelso. I was wondering if they assign seats or if you just pick yer own. I'm hoping it's pick yer own. That way I might have the option of moving if I end up sitting with someone named 'piggy'.

Yeah I have. I now trying to turn what I got left to lose now into muscle. I'm planning to do a half marathon in May pending on my left knee. It slides out of place when I do a lot of running from an old soccer injury, so it might not work out, but hey, at least if I can't, I'll get in shape training. Oh and I did it by stepping away from the twinkies, haha. No really, made a lot of lifestyle changes I knew I could stick with rather than a fly by night diet I would burn out on in 3 weeks.

Took one from austin tx to la then took the coast starlight from la to oakland--just because I've always wanted to take a train.

The ride from tx to la was rediculous. Biggest waste of money ever. The sleeper was shitty and the train was *very* late everywhere. Coast starlight was actually pretty nice and got us there right on time.
So pretty much it depends on what route you're taking I guess, but why not...it's something to experience and the starlight is a pretty nice ride.

This was a few years ago too though.

:edit: The scenery on the coast starlight was pretty awesome as well...

Just took a round trip to Chicago about 6 weeks ago, and thought it was great. 4 1/2 hours each way, got to pick my own seat, Conductors were cool, let me step off and grab half a cig when we made stops, cars were clean and comfortable, and during day light, I got to snoop in peoples back yards as we rolled by. Saw an Austin Healy bug eye sprite sitting in someone's yard about 60 miles from home, One day I'm gonna take a ride up there. I could never fit in one, but I could flip it on ebay for a nice profit.
Oh yeah, Round trip was $38.00 include the metro bus fare, I spent $46 on transportation. If I would have driven, I would have spent $45.00 just to park at the Court house.

I went from Wichita to Chicago two weeks ago.

The dining car was only open a coupla hours and you had to make reservations. The lounge car "Snack bar" was open, then clsoed, then, two hours outa Chiacgo, they closed it!

Freaks everywhere, people with no luggage and the dirty clothes on their backs heaidng coast to caost for no apparent reason.

The conductor will most likely seat you, but run for the lounge car as soon as you can and stake out a seat and keep it.

It beat the Hell out of taking the bus, but not an adventure I'm eager to repeat soon. I got on at 0300 hours and got to Chicago early evening.

AmTrack's On Time Arrivals are worse than the airline industries. I don't understand how... They know who else is gonna be on the tracks and for how long, they know the speed limits etc... The Carolinian runs on time only 25% of the time. It's a freaking train it's on time percentage rate should be in the 90's.

Do yourself a favor and get an economy bedroom. It comes with all the meals in the dining car and you get your own private room. Makes the trip so much better than being in coach for that long.

I did a round trip from San Diego to Anahiem and back recently with a
*business class* ticket. Very comfortable seats and the ride was smooth.
