Cockfighting investigation prompts seizure of hundreds of roosters at SW Side home

By Dale Quinn
arizona daily star
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 01.01.2007

Deputies seized more than 300 roosters and 30 hens Friday when they searched the Southwest Side home of a man who admitted to owning fighting cocks earlier in the week.
No arrests have been made, said Sgt. James Ogden, spokesman for the Pima County Sheriff's Department.
The roosters will be euthanized, and the hens — if healthy — will be put up for adoption, Ogden said.
Deputies also found cockfighting paraphernalia at the home in the 2000 block of West Via Vista Bonita, which is near South Mission and West Los Reales roads.
Ogden said the investigation began when deputies were called to a cockfight taking place at another address on the Southwest Side.
They detained and questioned individuals at that home, one of whom admitted to owning fighting roosters. Deputies then obtained a search warrant and raided the house Friday night, Ogden said.
When the investigation is completed the Sheriff's Department will hand it over to the Pima County Attorney's Office for possible charges,, Ogden said.
Cockfighting has been a tradition in Southern Arizona that dates back to frontier days, said Marsh Myers, the director of education and animal cruelty prevention for the Humane Society of Southern Arizona.
Owners and raisers of fighting birds moved their operations underground when cockfighting was outlawed in Arizona in 1998,, he said.
"What we know is Southern Arizona is a hotbed for animal fighting, both cockfighting and dog fighting," Myers said.DUH!!!!
While roosters are naturally territorial and will defend their roosts, the birds involved in fighting are trained to brutally kill one another, which makes the activity inhumane, Myers said.
Cockfighting also presents a public health issue as the birds are moved illegally across state and national borders without the proper checks to ensure they're not carrying diseases, Myers said.

Geesh! Looks like we have another Brad on the board.

Cockfighting is still legal in New Mexico, and maybe still legal in Lousiana.

My very first experience with a native here when we moved was dropping off the U-haul truck on the far west side.

It was a ranch, where the guy spread his income across a wide swath of sources, apparently including U-haul dropoffs. We drove by the place 3 times looking for a brick and mortar joint

Well, he apparently also funded some of his spending money by raising cocks. It was obvious by the ratty and torn leaflets stapled all over that he was supplying them to the by then illegal fighting arenas.

It was an interesting introduction to Tucson

Yes, it is still legal here in louisiana. They have been trying to outlaw it for a couple of years now but I guess some of the top government officials still love their cocks.

When I was about 7 years old I went to some bull roast at the Moose Lodge in Manassas, VA with my Mom and Dad. I remember walking into this back room where there was all kinds of commotion...men yelling and tossing money around, birds squaking. Yup, cock fights. I was fasinated. Then my Mom found me in there and pulled me out faster than you could say dead bird My Dad told me on the way home I wasn't allowed to tell anyone what I saw. Not just cock fights, but illigal cock fights with betting at the Moose Lodge

I actually used to work with a guy that fought them. He had some serious money tied up in a bunch of chickens! He paid 1000 bucks for one blade spur

He said the most he ever won was 25 grand in a weekend

So I've never been to a fight, legal or otherwise, but I did grow up on a farm.

You folks do realized that these things just kill one another for shits and giggles on a daily basis, right?

I don't reckon I have a problem with folks betting on it, if they want.

WRONG !!

The birds are not trained to kill or fight, they do that on their own. The only thing a breeder does is find the ones who are better at it.
