Tool loaned, now back with a catch!
So, I made a 1 5/16 socket to get the pinion nut off my rear D60 a few years back, you have to machine the outside diameter down to get it to fit into the yoke. The socket cost me about 20 bucks and I had to turn it down on the shops lathe.
My buddy asked to borrow it maybe a year ago or so, I loaned it out. Maybe 3 months later, I wanted to change my pinion seal, so I ask for it back. Says he doesn't have it. Said he gave it back to me. So, crap, I tear apart the house, don't remember getting it back, but whatever, I can't find it anywhere, so I never change the pinion seal. Last week, I notice some play in my pinion, so I wanted to take it apart to check my bearings and maybe remove a shim to tighten it back up a bit, so I search yet again to no avail. I call my buddy and ask him if he has it again. He walks out and checks his tool box and says he doesn't have mine, but I could borrow his. Said he got one from a local mechanic to use, the guy apparently just ground down the outside of one to fit he said. So, I swing by pick up "his" socket. I swear its mine!! It looks EXACTLY like the one I made. Craftsman 12 point 3/4" drive, thats what I had. I turned it down roughly 1" down on a lathe. It looks like someone just marked up the outside of it with a grinder to scuff up the outside of it, but they didn't do a good job, there are a few spots where you can see a precision machined surface! So, I am 100% sure its mine. Question is, do I not bring it up to my buddy? Do I just say it looks just like mine, offer a way out and see if he fesses up? He's a pretty good friend, but its like he is steeling from me and lying to my face! Its only 20 bucks, but if he wanted one, he could have given me a socket to turn down!!! Pics: ![]()

Hard as it may be for you, LET IT PASS.
You "have his number now" as my Dad always says. His punishment for doing shit like that, is that he has to live the rest of his life as HIM. Wish him a long one. edit: (oh, and mark you farkin tools with an engraver) Last edited by drydocker; 01-07-2007 at 07:57 PM. |

I'd just make it a point to keep it and when he asks for in in a few months tell him you gave it back to him.

Ask him who the mechanic buddy is and when he answers, tell him that you loaned it out to that guy a while back.
Then keep the damn thing locked up in your tool box. |

The only person I loan tools to is my neighbor. He gave me a brand new 35" Buckshot for a spare recently as payback out of the blue. He shows respect for my tools. I have lost too many tools to others or had them returned broken or rusted to loan anyone else.

"Borrow" it for a really long time and then do what he did to you. Tell him you returned about a month later :

Maybe even turn a little bit off of it again to get the machined surface back.

I'de say he's not really your friend.
I can't imagine any of my friends that I'de loan tools to doing that. Heck, my BIL is borrowing my MM210 and aquired a much better regulator for it than came with it. (the style that has the floating ball) |

Stick the machined end in a vise and break it. Give it back to him and shrug your shoulders.
Seriously, WTF kind of friend does this shit? |

When you're done with it, throw it through his fucking window. Then make yourself a new one and don't loan it out.

Buddy of mine loaned an old "friend" of ours Tesla's 5 man acoustical jam on cassette (remember those
) a long time ago, and didn't see it for months. He was over his house one day and asked for it back and the dude insisted it was his and he paid for it. My buddy never did get his tape back. This guy was nothing but a stoner lump of shit. Still is, 15 years later. I have other tales about the guy, but I'm not getting into them, I'll just get re-pissed off about them

If the guy honestly thinks he returned it-it could possibly be a legimate mistake-how many times would you bet your right arm on something-only to find out you were wrong? A socket is not worth a friendship, or even a thread in my opinion...
If he has a history of doing this, or it becomes a regular habbit-then its a different story. One time deal-forget it; life is too short |

If he's a good friend, let it go. One of my best friends is constantly helping me out but I rarely get the chance to pay him back. Sometimes he loans me a $20 and I might not get the chance to pay him back till 6 months later (out of town constantly). It all comes back around and he knows it. I just wish I could do more to help him out sooner.

Keep it, tell him he's an idiot because that is the one you loaned him.
